Position Overview

The Trauma Recovery Program Manager will serve as an integral member of the Trauma Unit team, ensuring that all facets of patient care and rehabilitation are meticulously coordinated to enhance the patient experience and promote effective long-term recovery.

Key Responsibilities

The Trauma Recovery Program Manager will provide professional guidance and oversight to the multidisciplinary team (MDT) in the organization and management of the trauma patient journey.

This role involves close collaboration with emergency department and trauma specialists, as well as other relevant departments, to facilitate and communicate the rehabilitation and repatriation processes for patients who have experienced significant trauma. The Manager will ensure that rehabilitation plans are received from the major trauma center and effectively communicated to the appropriate clinical personnel. Additionally, the Manager will establish and maintain a dynamic database of these patients to monitor their progress and will work in partnership with Trauma Unit colleagues to offer information, support, and resources to ensure optimal recovery outcomes for all trauma patients.

The Manager is expected to possess comprehensive knowledge of the health status and rehabilitation plans for trauma patients, as well as familiarity with suitable rehabilitation facilities. This position will assist in the design, development, and coordination of thorough rehabilitation programs in collaboration with patients, their families, key rehabilitation team members, ward staff, and other necessary services or agencies.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Trauma Recovery Program Manager will:

  • Function as an independent practitioner managing a clinical caseload within a defined area of responsibility, adhering to established guidelines as the specialist Trauma Unit Rehabilitation Manager.
  • Identify patients with an injury severity score exceeding 9 and maintain a live database to track their progress.
  • Oversee the coordination and communication of rehabilitation and repatriation pathways for patients with major trauma, ensuring that rehabilitation plans are received and disseminated appropriately.
  • Act as an advocate for both adult and pediatric patients with trauma-related injuries, coordinating their acute care, rehabilitation, and discharge processes.
  • Serve as a key worker, managing the care of trauma patients across various specialties.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure a smooth transition from hospital to community or further rehabilitation.
  • Participate actively in MDT discussions, contributing to the development of care plans and ensuring adherence to agreed actions.
  • Assist in the completion and coordination of Rehabilitation Plans for eligible patients and liaise with relevant data administrators regarding data quality.
  • Provide professional leadership and direction to the MDT in planning, coordinating, and evaluating rehabilitation pathways.
  • Attend relevant meetings as a representative of the Trust and advise on service enhancements in line with local and national guidelines.
  • Work closely with clinical managers and consultants to ensure timely repatriation of patients from major trauma centers to the appropriate clinical specialties.
  • Collect and analyze data from teams involved in the patient pathway to evaluate service effectiveness and patient experience.
  • Conduct evaluations of the patient journey, identifying areas of excellence and opportunities for improvement, and disseminate findings to the wider MDT.
  • Contribute to the investigation and analysis of trauma-related risks, incidents, and outcomes, escalating findings to the clinical lead and implementing lessons learned.

Clinical Responsibilities

The Trauma Recovery Program Manager will:

  • Utilize advanced skills to analyze assessment results, interpret options, and collaborate with patients to establish appropriate rehabilitation goals.
  • Provide specialized advice to the MDT regarding the management of patients to maximize rehabilitation potential and facilitate future clinical planning.
  • Offer expert guidance to patients, families, and caregivers on managing complex trauma-related conditions.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the impact of disability, educating patients and caregivers on their diagnosis, prognosis, and rehabilitation, while promoting understanding of functional implications.
  • Organize and ensure the delivery of coordinated multidisciplinary care programs for complex trauma patients.
  • Maintain accurate written and electronic records, including comprehensive assessment reports and relevant data collection.
  • Actively engage in discharge planning to ensure patients receive appropriate ongoing care post-admission.
  • Participate in clinical handovers and provide leadership to inpatient therapy staff as needed.
  • Coordinate and communicate current and future rehabilitation pathways for patients.
  • Uphold professional standards, recognizing personal boundaries and seeking guidance as necessary.
  • Respect the individuality, values, and cultural diversity of clients, contributing to a service that is sensitive to these needs.
  • Assess and manage clinical risks, resolving issues to enhance patient independence and safety.
  • Provide strategic advice and collaborate with other professionals regarding future management outcomes.
  • Contribute to the Trust's clinical governance and quality agenda, including setting and monitoring practice standards.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to ensure completion of rehabilitation outcome measures upon admission and discharge.

Communication Skills

The Trauma Recovery Program Manager will:

  • Exhibit excellent communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare professionals across the Trust and network.
  • Foster collaborative partnerships with internal and external agencies.
  • Represent the Trauma Unit in policy and protocol development to ensure integration into Trust-wide patient care planning.
  • Utilize various communication tools to effectively engage with patients and families, facilitating understanding of their conditions and supporting self-management.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of all relevant information in patient notes.
  • Support colleagues in delivering sensitive information regarding rehabilitation, goals, progress, and discharge recommendations.
  • Address concerns from patients and caregivers regarding service provision, employing negotiation skills to achieve satisfactory outcomes.

Service Development

The Trauma Recovery Program Manager will:

  • Participate in the development and delivery of educational programs both internally and across the network.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to plan treatment and management of trauma patients, providing guidance to ensure safe case management.
  • Support staff at all levels in the care and management of trauma patients, offering guidance, support, and education.
  • Lead audits to assess Trauma Unit standards and escalate areas of non-compliance to governance groups, engaging staff in improvement efforts.
  • Reflect on ethical issues and provide guidance to staff as necessary.
  • Critically evaluate current research findings, applying them to practice and sharing insights at a local level.
  • Maintain clinical skills and knowledge to support a professional development portfolio for ongoing registration.
  • Contribute to the quality and governance framework, particularly regarding patient safety and risk management.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Degree level or equivalent qualification.
  • Professional Registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Evidence of relevant and up-to-date continuing professional development (CPD).

Desirable:

  • Specialist postgraduate qualification or training in rehabilitation at the Master's level.
  • Trauma Immediate Life Support (TILS) Certificate.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course Certificate.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential:

  • Extensive knowledge of the trauma patient pathway and trauma network.
  • Specialist knowledge of conditions related to traumatic injury.
  • Understanding and experience in audit, quality improvement, service development, and research methodology.

Desirable:

  • Membership in relevant special interest groups.

Skills

Essential:

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Expert clinical skills in rehabilitation.
  • Advanced clinical reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to lead, support, coach, and motivate others.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure, including in traumatic situations.

Desirable:

  • Experience as a practice placement educator with a focus on student education.
