Job Summary

The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the newly created position of Head of Policy and Public Affairs. This role will be responsible for shaping the policy agenda for the RTPI and the planning system as a whole.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement effective policy and public affairs strategies to achieve the RTPI's objectives
  • Lead the policy team and public affairs teams, providing oversight and line management responsibilities
  • Be the primary point of contact for the England Policy Committee and National Directors to ensure effective operation across the UK
  • Collaborate with stakeholders, including Government, parliamentarians, and Whitehall officials, to advocate on behalf of the membership
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders to advance the RTPI's policy agenda
  • Provide strategic advice to the Director of Communications and other senior leaders on policy and public affairs matters

Requirements

  • Chartered planner with excellent working knowledge of the planning systems of the UK
  • Experience in active public affairs or a strong working knowledge of central Government
  • Active curiosity for how planning and public policy interact, and recognition of the need for outcomes from the RTPI's activity
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience of leading teams and managing budgets
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders
