Position Overview

This role encompasses various responsibilities in newsgathering across the Channel 5 news and planning departments. You will provide essential support to our News Editors and planning team for both television and digital platforms, focusing on securing content and guests while managing resources effectively. The ideal candidate will be proactive in identifying story opportunities, possess a solid understanding of the 5 News agenda, and demonstrate the enthusiasm necessary to produce engaging programs. Additionally, you will recognize the significance of social media and collaborate with our correspondents to enhance our online presence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support News Editors, Planning Editor, and Deputy News Editor as needed.
  • Manage incoming calls at the news desk, prioritizing information effectively.
  • Engage with potential guests or contributors, coordinating bookings and negotiating fees within budget constraints.
  • Communicate information clearly and concisely.
  • Coordinate the assignment and briefing of newsgathering personnel.
  • Act as a primary liaison between the news desk and field teams.
  • Work with public relations to secure high-profile guests.
  • Log visual content as required.
  • Maintain awareness of copyright, access information, and compliance regulations.
  • Research and negotiate the acquisition of stills and video content within budget.
  • Source and secure video and other materials from social media for both TV and digital outputs.
  • Field inquiries and facilitate special projects.
  • Identify and research stories, securing filming opportunities.
  • Ensure collaboration with ITV News and Channel 4 News desks to avoid duplication in assignments.
  • Identify opportunities for digital content and collaborate with the news desk, planning team, and Digital Editor to deliver them.
  • Understand the importance of accurate logging of materials and compliance with ITN policies.
  • Coordinate with the rostering team regarding the availability of newsgathering staff.
  • Occasionally fulfill the role of Deputy News Editor.
