Chelmsford, Essex, United Kingdom Teledyne UK Limited Full time

Position Overview

Company Background:

Teledyne UK Limited stands at the forefront of specialized components and subsystems, delivering innovative solutions across various sectors including healthcare, scientific research, aerospace, defense, and industrial applications. The advanced imaging sensors developed at our facilities have played pivotal roles in significant space exploration missions.

Our Space Imaging division is broadening its range of projects aimed at creating Front End Electronics (FEE) systems tailored for space applications. These systems will integrate a CMOS detector, FEE, an FPGA (with design code in VHDL), and a Microprocessor (MCU) into a cohesive unit. The new systems demand high-quality FPGA designs capable of operating in space with exceptional reliability for extended missions.

Role Summary and Key Responsibilities:

We are in search of a Lead Embedded Software Architect to become an integral part of our team. This role involves collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team of electronics, FPGA, and embedded software engineers. The successful candidate will gain a comprehensive understanding of our existing and upcoming devices, coupled with the practical skills to develop embedded software and spearhead firmware development for the next generation of FEE products designed for space applications. The current software is primarily developed using Microchip's MPLAB-X IDE and is written in C, adhering to MISRA C coding standards.

The Architect will also contribute to bid and business development efforts in partnership with other team members.

This support will encompass reviewing and defining technical proposals, performing trade-off analyses, and providing estimates for effort, development timelines, and material costs.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years of professional experience as an embedded software engineer, specializing in reliability software using C.
  • Proven experience in developing bare-metal embedded software for 32-bit ARM processors (such as SAM Microchip, STM32).
  • Familiarity with software development adhering to MISRA C coding standards and guidelines.
  • Strong understanding of hardware interfaces, including SPI, I2C, and UART.
  • Experience in embedded firmware development, interfacing with custom hardware.
  • Ability to interpret schematic diagrams and understand digital circuits.
  • Experience in developing unit tests, conducting bench testing, and validating software functionality and safety requirements.
  • Capability to generate precise estimates and define tasks for software product delivery.
  • Proficient in authoring necessary documentation, including requirements specifications, detailed design documents, technical reports, test plans, and user manuals.
  • Familiarity with issue tracking and version control systems such as Redmine, JIRA, GIT, or SVN.
  • Experience in debugging embedded software applications.
  • Skills in developing modular software architectures.
  • Provide technical leadership to a small team of software engineers, offering coaching and mentoring throughout the software development lifecycle to meet project objectives with the required quality standards. Collaborate closely with FPGA, Electronics, and Systems Engineers to design solutions that fulfill customer requirements.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience in Aerospace, Space, or Defense sectors.
  • Knowledge of ECSS standards and development processes.
  • Familiarity with SpaceWire and RMAP or CCSDS protocols.
  • Experience in developing Windows-based test applications and scripts using C#, C++, Python, or similar languages.
  • Knowledge of MPLAB-X IDE and Microchip SAM32 ARM M7 processors.
  • Experience in developing embedded software applications for imaging systems.
  • Proficient in using electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.

Employee Benefits:

  • Competitive annual leave policy, including the option to purchase additional leave.
  • On-site parking facilities and secure areas for bicycles and motorcycles.
  • Participation in an electric car scheme with attractive leasing rates.
  • Comprehensive pension scheme with company contributions.
  • Access to health plans to support everyday healthcare needs.
  • Opportunities for professional development, including paid memberships to relevant professional bodies.
  • Access to a wide range of training resources through Teledyne University.
  • A friendly and inclusive workplace culture.

Teledyne UK Limited is committed to conducting business with the highest ethical standards, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Our reputation for integrity and innovation is paramount to our success.
