Job Summary

The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners seeks a highly skilled and innovative professional to lead the development of outstanding collections and access to information for the Harvard community. As the Head of Humanities and Social Sciences Collection Development, you will be responsible for allocating and managing collections funds exceeding $10 million annually, leading a team of 11 staff, and collaborating with other collecting areas of Harvard Library to ensure seamless acquisition and use of resources.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Develop and implement strategies to anticipate and meet the intense information needs of Harvard's academic community.
  2. Lead a team of collection development librarians in furthering the growth and management of a collection that is inclusive of global voices and global frameworks of knowledge.
  3. Collaborate with faculty and students to align collecting policies and practices with academic priorities.
  4. Develop and maintain excellent relationships with faculty and students, and ensure that collection development librarians' responsibilities are consistent with all FAS libraries.
  5. Collaborate with peers across the Ivy Plus Libraries Confederation (IPLC) and Research Collections and Preservation Consortium (ReCAP) member libraries in the development of collective collections.
  6. Lead prioritization of collections digitization for collections under the purview of Humanities and Social Sciences Collection Development.
  7. Serve on Harvard and external committees and task forces as appropriate.
Requirements
  1. Advanced degree in library and information science, or international equivalent.
  2. Minimum 5 years of professional experience with increasing management responsibilities.
  3. Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience.
  4. Experience with traditional and emerging collection development and management strategies.
  5. Experience in international collections and area studies.

  5. Ability to work collaboratively, initiate and adapt to change, and to be flexible.
  6. Demonstrated successful management of large budgets in a complex fund structure.
  7. Experience negotiating with vendors and publishers.
  8. Demonstrated knowledge of research trends and the scholarly process.
  9. Demonstrated experience implementing innovative approaches to provide access to collections and to facilitate their use in research and teaching.
  10. An active record of professional engagement in collection development.
  11. Reading knowledge of multiple languages.
Working Conditions
  1. The position is based on site in Cambridge, MA. There may be the opportunity for a hybrid work model compliant with Harvard University policies.
  2. May interact with collections that may contain dust, mold, or other contaminants.
  3. The work associated with this position is performed in a library/office setting.
