Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated full-time Senior Paediatric Consultant to join our esteemed team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in providing exceptional paediatric care to infants, children, and adolescents in both outpatient and inpatient environments.
We are looking for a passionate and proactive individual who embodies the principles of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and aligns with the core values of our Trust. Ideal candidates will be eager to enhance standards of care and collaborate with a dynamic multidisciplinary team, including fellow consultants, junior medical staff, nursing professionals, physiotherapists, dietitians, and specialists from tertiary services.
As a Consultant on-call, you will have the chance to refine your clinical skills during tier 2 resident shifts while also exercising leadership and mentorship during traditional consultant duties and after-hours on-call responsibilities.
We encourage prospective candidates to reach out for an informal discussion and to arrange a visit to our department to meet our team and gain a comprehensive understanding of the role.
Main Responsibilities
This role encompasses a General Paediatrics with Neonates focus, structured around 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), which includes 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) PAs and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). Flexible working arrangements are available, with the potential for time-shifting across a seven-day workweek.
The Consultant will lead weekly outpatient general paediatric clinics and participate in the Consultant of the Week rota on a 1:10 basis.
This position entails resident on-call duties for weekend day shifts and weekday night shifts, requiring proficiency in neonatal and paediatric life support, alongside the capability to manage a team of junior doctors effectively.
Outpatient sessions will provide the successful candidate with opportunities to assess new and returning paediatric patients locally. Candidates with relevant subspecialty interests will receive support to develop their expertise and conduct specialized clinics.
During attending sessions and tier 3 on-call duties, the Consultant will oversee the management of acute general paediatric and level 1 neonatal wards, working closely with a multidisciplinary team. This role also offers opportunities for leadership development and bedside teaching for junior doctors.
