Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, United Kingdom The Institute of Cancer Research Full time

Position Overview:

Ultrasound imaging plays a crucial role in the realm of oncology, particularly due to its capability for real-time three-dimensional visualization. This technology is essential for precise tissue localization and monitoring, which are vital for directing therapeutic interventions such as radiotherapy, ultrasound ablation, RF ablation, and surgical procedures.

We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Postdoctoral Training Fellow to join our research initiative titled "Adaptive Data-driven Radiation Oncology," supported by Cancer Research UK. The ideal candidate will possess a strong enthusiasm for imaging technologies, ultrasound applications, and the advancement of innovative solutions to enhance cancer treatment methodologies.

Key Responsibilities:

As a member of the Harris group focused on "Imaging for Radiotherapy Adaptation," and in partnership with the Bamber and Oelfke groups specializing in ultrasound and radiotherapy physics, you will spearhead the creation of groundbreaking plane-wave and other imaging techniques. Your work will aim to optimize the utilization of 4D imaging sequences for radiotherapy guidance.

This role will leverage the advanced capabilities of the Verasonics Vantage research platform, in conjunction with state-of-the-art 2D ultrasound probe technologies (including 2D matrix arrays and row-column arrays), to develop customized solutions addressing real-world challenges in therapy guidance.

Essential Qualifications:

The successful applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Imaging, Physics, Ultrasound, or a related discipline.
  • Strong foundation in medical imaging, signal processing, and image analysis.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar; experience with GPU programming is advantageous.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities.
  • Capacity to collaborate effectively within a dynamic research environment.
  • A genuine passion for contributing to technological advancements and scientific progress.

Additional Information:

The Institute of Cancer Research has a policy stating that Postdoctoral Training Fellows may be employed for a maximum of 7 years at this level, provided that their total postdoctoral experience does not exceed 10 years.

Department Overview:

The "Imaging for Radiotherapy Adaptation" group operates within the Joint Department of Physics at the ICR Division of Radiotherapy and Imaging. This department is dedicated to conducting and translating research and development in medical physics into clinical applications, collaborating with both academic and clinical professionals.
