JOB OBJECTIVE

The Product Category Strategist will be tasked with optimizing Gross Margin contributions within the designated range of products or categories they oversee. This role will leverage various strategies to enhance sales and/or margins while aiding in the formulation of category strategies aimed at fostering future competitive advantages and growth.

JOB ENVIRONMENT

Halfords Autocentres is experiencing significant growth, aspiring to reach a £1bn valuation in the near future. This position is crucial for executing the category strategy, reporting directly to the Head of Category and playing an integral role within the category team.

The incumbent is expected to develop expertise in their domain, collaborating closely with key stakeholders to effectively implement the category plan and drive profitable expansion.

PRIMARY DUTIES

Place customer needs at the forefront of decision-making, collaborating with marketing and customer departments to thoroughly understand requirements in the specified area.Gain a comprehensive understanding of each sub-product group at a strategic level, including market size, competitive offerings, supply dynamics, market shares, growth, and trends.Contribute to the development of the category plan that encompasses all market aspects, our positioning, and identifies opportunities for increasing sales, profits, and/or market share.Actively seek customer feedback on our offerings and take appropriate actions based on insights.Establish the brand selection strategy within the category, ensuring a consistent brand offering aligned with our 'quality products' ethos.Oversee the range review process, conducting regular analyses of range performance to ensure all products and services meet expectations.Design and execute engaging category promotional campaigns in collaboration with the marketing department and all channel owners.Develop the pricing strategy for the category, ensuring maximization of gross margin.Regularly benchmark competitive pricing to optimize price elasticity.Proactively manage product mix to positively influence company profitability.Identify and introduce new products and services relevant to the category effectively.Ensure existing supplier agreements remain suitable and competitive through procurement and supplier management techniques.Implement supplier trading agreements, ensuring compliance with procurement policies such as ESG, CSR, and Ethical Trading.Conduct regular price benchmarking or tender activities to secure the best possible cost prices.Establish and monitor service levels from suppliers, managing any underperformance.Negotiate and optimize all rebate agreements within the category, proactively managing growth rebates to maximize returns.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Strong commercial awareness.Prior experience in Category Management, Procurement, or Buying.Customer-centric, skilled in identifying customer needs.Proficient negotiator with experience managing complex supplier relationships.Able to lead direct reports and inspire colleagues.Effective interaction with Leadership Team.Self-motivated, capable of taking initiative and determining the best course of action.Positive attitude with a proactive approach to problem-solving.Adept at analyzing and interpreting large data sets to make informed decisions.Strong engagement skills, able to align key stakeholders.Familiarity with the automotive aftermarket or a demonstrated understanding of the industry.
