The Price Service is a crucial HTTP API that manages pricing and promotions across all Tesco platforms, playing a vital role in our mission to serve millions of customers weekly in the UK and beyond. The team's contributions are evident in Tesco's checkout systems, websites, and mobile applications. This API is designed for public access, fostering future innovations in the industry. Our engineering team tackles complex distributed systems challenges to ensure optimal performance and availability, with discussions around the CAP theorem being a common practice.
Our technology stack includes Java, Vert.x, RxJava, Groovy, Couchbase, and Kafka, and we operate on AWS and Azure with a fully automated testing and continuous deployment pipeline. We adhere to Agile methodologies, employing Kanban and other strategies to enhance our success.
Our team culture is characterized by humility, support, and collaboration, with regular code reviews via GitHub and a strong emphasis on pair programming.

Your Responsibilities
As a Software Development Manager, your key role will be to cultivate and sustain a dedicated, engaged, and efficient team of engineers. You will achieve this by genuinely caring for your team members, ensuring their satisfaction, motivation, and growth, guiding them towards practical technical solutions while remaining hands-on with the code (without becoming a hindrance). You will also take accountability for challenges while celebrating collective achievements, effectively acting as a catalyst for your team's success. Specifically, you will:
Support the professional development of your engineers by identifying growth opportunities, mentoring, addressing concerns, and implementing performance management when necessary. Enhance the overall capabilities of Tesco Technology by participating in our engineering recruitment efforts and advocating for the creation of successful, diverse teams. Collaborate closely with Product Management to identify and mitigate risks associated with outcomes and assist in prioritizing and refining viable technical solutions for delivery. Represent the Quote team in broader technical discussions across various business units. Take charge of delivering specific outcomes or collaborate with program management to achieve larger objectives, consistently driving quality improvements. Assume responsibility for non-functional requirements, including performance, availability, reliability, and security. Continuously seek opportunities to advance and refine our technology, processes, and practices.Qualifications
Demonstrated experience managing software engineering teams ranging from 5 to 15 members. Hands-on experience in developing RESTful API services and distributed systems that operate at scale. Strong problem-solving, analytical, and computational skills, with a comfort in designing and reasoning about systems. You approach challenges with a detailed and logical mindset, maintaining ownership until resolution. A customer-centric approach, balancing outcome delivery with technical excellence, prioritizing customer needs above all. Proficiency in Java 8+, experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), familiarity with both SQL and NoSQL databases, and knowledge of messaging systems (e.g., Kafka).
