About the Role

The University of Cambridge is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Biological Safety Advisor to join our team. As a key member of our Safety Office, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our staff, students, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Biological Safety Advice: Provide expert guidance on biological safety matters, including the safe handling and use of pathogens, toxins, and genetically modified organisms.
  • Policy Development: Develop, review, and update biological safety policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and best practices.
  • Risk Assessments: Conduct thorough risk assessments for higher-risk activities involving biological materials and advise on appropriate control measures and contingency plans.
  • Training and Education: Design, review, or deliver training programs on biological safety for staff and students, promoting a proactive safety culture.
  • Audits and Inspections: Lead or participate in audits and inspections of laboratories and facilities to ensure regulatory compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Incident Management: Provide technical support and advice during biological safety incidents, including investigation of root causes and prevention of recurrence.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with academic departments, research groups, and other stakeholders to support safe research practices and compliance with safety regulations.
  • Compliance: Support the management of University and departmental licenses, including APHA, SAPO, and HTA.
Requirements
  • Qualifications: A degree in biological sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, or a related field. A postgraduate qualification in biosafety or a related discipline is desirable.
  • Professional Certifications: Applicants with a NEBOSH certificate or equivalent qualification will be prioritized. Biosafety Practitioner Level 1 certification is an advantage.
  • Experience: Proven experience in a biological safety role, preferably within a research or academic environment. Practical experience of working in high-containment level facilities is desirable.
  • Skills: Strong knowledge of biological safety regulations and best practices, excellent communication and training skills, and the ability to conduct thorough risk assessments.
