Job Overview

Band 7 Paediatric AHP Practice Development and Clinical Responsibilities (40:60 Clinical: Education) Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist.

Key Responsibilities

To establish and oversee the Children's Therapies and Gait education initiative, fostering an understanding of both existing and emerging educational requirements across the four pillars of practice within the Children's Therapies and Gait Clinical Service Unit (CSU).

To spearhead and facilitate the creation and implementation of professional development pathways and educational programs within the Children's Therapies and Gait CSU. Collaborating with the trust's practice education team will enhance the visibility of educational and developmental opportunities for staff in this field.

To deliver exceptional clinical care to patients at Oxford Children's Hospital, emphasizing developmental care (PT) and elective orthopaedic/spinal care (OT), while also providing support for cross-covering children's acute inpatient care as necessary.

For Physiotherapy roles only - To engage in the out-of-hours respiratory physiotherapy on-call schedule for the Oxford Children's Hospital.

Job Duties

1. To actively contribute to the education of multidisciplinary teams (Allied Health Professionals and Healthcare Scientists), patients, families, and caregivers as appropriate.

2. To support the mentorship, training, and evaluation of Band 5 and Band 6 PTs or OTs, therapy assistants, and PT or OT students.

3. To take initiative regarding personal learning and engage with a variety of profession-based and multi-professional learning opportunities within the department and the wider trust.

4. To maintain a detailed record of personal professional development and uphold a CPD portfolio in accordance with HCPC standards.

5. To stay informed about the latest evidence related to child development and developmental care.

6. To assist in the design and delivery of training that is engaging for learners and enables them to achieve their educational and organizational objectives.

Wider Educational Initiatives

1. To undertake education-focused project work, audits, and benchmarking, presenting findings within the Children's Therapy and Gait CSU and connecting with the broader trust practice education network as needed.

2. To enhance access to education across all clinical specialties within the Children's Therapies and Gait CSU.

3. To cultivate a clinical learning environment that promotes ongoing learning and supports the personal and professional growth of staff across the CSU.

4. To assist in the development of a comprehensive training needs analysis that guides educational investments based on priorities and risks.

5. To create clear training pathways within the Children's Therapies and Gait CSU that encompass the four pillars of practice.

6. To serve as a knowledgeable resource for staff and managers within the CSU seeking support related to practice development and education.

7. To promptly escalate concerns regarding training gaps in practice or resources to the senior leadership team.

8. To present at practice development forums and other relevant educational meetings on advancements in practice and provide advice as necessary.

9. To act as a deputy for physiotherapy team leaders in operational management as required to support service delivery in the absence of senior staff.

10. To collaborate with divisional education teams to advance practice development opportunities for therapies and Healthcare Scientists within the Children's Hospital Directorate.

11. To foster a culture of lifelong learning within the CSU, providing high-level professional leadership for workforce development and education within the trust.

Clinical Responsibilities:

1. To conduct patient assessments as an autonomous practitioner, including those with diverse or complex presentations; employing sound clinical reasoning skills, knowledge of evidence-based practice, and a variety of treatment modalities to determine accurate diagnoses, formulate care plans, evaluate patient progress, and ensure appropriate onward care.

2. To coordinate interventions that may involve other disciplines; advising and educating patients, caregivers, relatives, and other health professionals. This includes representing physiotherapy or occupational therapy and/or individual patients at multidisciplinary team meetings to ensure coordinated care delivery.

3. To maintain precise electronic and written records in accordance with Professional Standards, providing comprehensive progress and discharge reports to referrers as required.

4. To manage clinical risk within one's caseload consistently.

5. For Physiotherapy roles only - To participate in on-call, weekend, and emergency duties as a lone practitioner within the hospital site, providing guidance to medical and nursing staff, and other members of the MDT regarding patients' cardiorespiratory functions.

6. To manage potentially stressful or emotional situations with empathy.

7. To effectively motivate and engage others through strong communication skills, utilizing both verbal and non-verbal methods, along with written and electronic information as necessary.

8. To demonstrate the ability to convey complex and sensitive information to patients, caregivers, and other staff, especially when communication barriers exist.

Management Duties:

1. To supervise, instruct, and evaluate junior staff and support workers.

2. To flexibly plan and organize personal time, patient caseload, meetings, training, and adjust plans as needed based on staffing levels.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications:

  • HCPC registration
  • Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist
