Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within our busy Genomics Laboratory for a skilled Healthcare Science Practitioner to join our Genomics Specimen Reception and Send-out Team. We are seeking an individual with a flexible attitude and experience in sample receipt, processing, and send-outs. This role involves supervising the Sample Receipt Reception Team with limited hands-on laboratory work, and some secondary laboratory tasks may be required as needed. Experience with electronic laboratory management systems is essential, as this role involves training and advising the team, as well as supporting the Reception Lead and Deputy Lead.

Main Duties
  • Act as the first point of contact for booking in queries.
  • Help structure and oversee the workflow of Specimen Reception.
  • Maintain the banking system for the storage of patient samples.
  • Prepare and package DNA samples and cultured cells for sending to other laboratories.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • Foundation degree or diploma in an appropriate scientific subject or alternative equivalent qualifications.

Desirable Qualifications

  • BSc degree in an appropriate biological science or equivalent qualifications.

Essential Experience

  • Experience in handling patient samples and data entry.
  • Experience of commonly used genomic laboratory techniques, including DNA extraction and quantification.
  • Working in a routine laboratory environment, following standard operating procedures.

Desirable Experience

  • Working with an electronic laboratory management system.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of laboratory health and safety issues.
  • Familiar with patient confidentiality and ethical issues.
  • Basic understanding of clinical genetic testing procedures.
  • Familiar with quality control procedures and laboratory accreditation.

Essential Skills

  • Good communication, both verbally and written.
  • Good teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to concentrate for prolonged periods and show attention to detail.
  • Computer literate.
  • Able to organize own workload and work under pressure, meeting deadlines and maintaining a high standard at all times.

Desirable Skills

  • Problem-solving and trouble-shooting.
