We are seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to become a vital member of our dedicated team responsible for designing and developing the platforms and systems that underpin essential functions at Our Future Health.

The systems you will work on encompass a variety of components, including participant-facing websites, the importation and processing of extensive health, NHS, and genetic datasets, as well as the de-identification and sharing of data within accredited Trusted Research Environments (TREs).

This is an exciting greenfield initiative, supported by a significant partnership with Microsoft, as we establish our new infrastructure on Azure. Candidates with experience in constructing public cloud-based platforms from inception are encouraged to apply. We value individuals who are enthusiastic about recommending modern technologies and methodologies that have proven successful in similar platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to our expanding technology team to develop cloud platforms that facilitate the growth of Our Future Health.
  • Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to define platform specifications.
  • Adopt an iterative approach to platform development, beginning with simple solutions and progressively increasing complexity.
  • Demonstrate strong experience in a Linux-centric environment.
  • Assist in establishing development processes within a new and evolving team.
  • Take ownership of solutions from initial concept through to deployment and beyond, participating in on-call rotations as necessary.
  • Integrate and deploy third-party tools as required by other teams.
  • Generate innovative solutions for complex technical challenges involving distributed systems, scalability, and security, translating these concepts into actionable designs and implementations.
  • Implement best practices concerning availability, scalability, operational excellence, and efficiency.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation.

What You Will Not Experience

  • Working in an isolated environment without the autonomy to make decisions.
  • Being in a position where the impact of your expertise is not visible.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Expertise in cloud DevOps/platform engineering and large-scale live services, with a strong preference for Azure; experience with additional clouds such as AWS or GCP is advantageous.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform, Ansible, Chef, or Puppet.
  • Proficient in coding and automating tasks using a high-level programming language, preferably Python.
  • Experience in developing and deploying tools related to data pipelines and ETL processes.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes and Docker.
  • Experience in deploying open-source technologies, including Python, Node.JS, Ruby, Postgres, and related CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong understanding of cloud security best practices and compliance.
  • Experience in designing, supporting, and troubleshooting production systems at scale.
  • Comprehensive understanding of technology stacks from networks to applications.
  • Experience with software engineering best practices, including unit testing, code reviews, design documentation, and excellent debugging and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience implementing continuous integration and deployment tools and practices.
  • Familiarity with agile methodologies, including code reviews and pair programming.
  • Ability to adapt and grow quickly as the organization scales.
  • Excellent communication skills, both in person and in writing, including the ability to present ideas clearly and create detailed diagrams and documentation.

Additionally, experience in the health domain would be a plus, encompassing areas such as clinical, wearables, consumer applications, genomics, pharmaceuticals/life sciences, or NHS.
