We are seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking nurse with a strong commitment to inpatient care to join us as the Acute Care Ward Manager.
An exciting opportunity has emerged within our male adult acute mental health inpatient ward.
We are looking for an individual who possesses a positive outlook and exceptional abilities to engage with patients facing long-term mental health challenges, while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

If you have prior experience in leadership and management within an inpatient context, you may be the ideal candidate to lead, manage, and motivate our committed team.
As a specialized service, we offer holistic, goal-oriented inpatient care to our patients. Typically, our patients are in the acute phase of a psychotic disorder, presenting significant risks to themselves or others, necessitating inpatient care.
Main Responsibilities
As the Acute Care Ward Manager, you will need to have a solid understanding of working in an acute environment. Exceptional leadership skills and experience are essential to guide the team effectively. You will oversee the operational management, organization, and delivery of high-quality nursing care and clinical leadership within the ward. Your role will involve providing, maintaining, and enhancing nursing care to the highest possible standards within the available resources.
The ward manager is regarded as a clinical leader, visible and actively engaged in role modeling, facilitation, and education for the nursing team.
We seek someone with outstanding communication skills who is passionate about delivering exceptional care in a compassionate setting. You should demonstrate a commitment to engaging creatively with a diverse range of service users, show initiative, and work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team, as well as with service users and their families.
You will collaborate with the leadership team, including the Modern Matron, Consultant Psychiatrist, and Psychologist, contributing to the development of acute service delivery across the Adult Acute Pathway. Close cooperation with the Senior Matron, Head of Nursing, Head of Service, and Clinical Director will also be essential.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
Job Purpose
- To manage the ward as a crucial component of the acute inpatient pathway within Oxford Health
- To ensure 24-hour full and accountable managerial responsibility for the ward
- To provide, maintain, and enhance nursing care to the highest standards
- To ensure the unit complies with safety and security standards as per TRUST STANDARDS, QNWA, CQC, HEALTHWATCH, etc.
- To ensure the ward meets quality and governance standards in accordance with TRUST STANDARDS, QNWA, CQC, HEALTHWATCH, etc.
Clinical Skills
- Develop effective multidisciplinary relationships through skilled communication with ward and community teams
- Engage proactively with patients and their families to build positive working alliances
- Commit to working alongside patients and their families
- Address assessed needs while respecting patient wishes in the acute inpatient setting
- Demonstrate clinical expertise relevant to Adults of Working Age inpatient care
- Conduct ethical and accountable practice, remaining open to peer scrutiny
- Maintain clear, effective, and accurate record-keeping
- Lead the clinical response to incidents on the ward
Leadership Skills
- Understand contemporary mental health care issues and articulate a clear vision for inpatient service development
- Be open to feedback on performance and implement action plans accordingly
- Act as a role model in the clinical environment for all staff
Management Skills
- Maintain overall containment and safety on the ward
- Manage care effectively in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Team
- Exhibit effective time management and prioritize competing demands
- Manage sickness, absence, leave, and disciplinary processes effectively
- Conduct recruitment processes efficiently
- Provide supportive and effective appraisals for nursing staff
- Coordinate effective supervision for the nursing team
- Ensure compliance with infection control legislation and report any necessary improvements
- Utilize staff resources effectively to manage patient care
Please Note:
- New starters undergo a 6-month probationary period, supported by an induction process
- Candidates attending interviews for non-qualified Band 1-5 posts must complete numeracy and literacy assessments
- Appointment is subject to satisfactory references covering 3 years of employment or study
- Mandatory and statutory training related to the role is required
