Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Medical Examiner Officer to join our team at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will play a vital role in supporting the Medical Examiner process, the Trust's mortality process, and providing support to staff around mortality and the ME Service.

Main Responsibilities
  • Effective communication with multidisciplinary teams, including doctors, nurses, families, and external stakeholders, to discuss medical certificates of cause of death and collect additional information.
  • Investigation work and review of patient notes to ensure accurate and complete documentation.
  • Development and implementation of strategies to improve the Medical Examiner Service and support the Trust's mortality process.
  • Collaboration with clinical teams to provide support and guidance on medical examiner scrutiny and outcomes.
Requirements
  • Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional with equivalent professional qualification or experience.
  • Experience working in a healthcare or related setting with multidisciplinary teams and organizational boundaries.
  • Understanding of medical terminology and ability to discuss causes and circumstances of death with bereaved families, clinicians, coroners, and registration service staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with senior clinicians, coroners, and other stakeholders.
  • Computer literacy to use multiple IT software for recording personal identifiable data and producing statistical information.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience as a Medical Examiner Officer.
  • Completion of the Royal College of Pathologists Medical Examiners Officers e-Learning.
