The Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) serves as the primary pension fund for universities and higher education institutions across the UK. We collaborate with approximately 330 employers to secure a stable financial future for our 500,000 members and their families. With total assets nearing £78 billion, we rank among the largest pension schemes in the UK. The management of USS is overseen by Universities Superannuation Scheme Limited (USSL), which operates in accordance with its trust deed, rules, and legal obligations.

USSL is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of three members appointed by the University and College Union (UCU), four members appointed by The Universities & Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), and five independent directors. The Board holds substantial responsibilities for governance and oversight of a business that provides intricate operational and advisory services within a highly regulated framework. Therefore, all Board members must possess exceptional strategic thinking, leadership, communication, influencing, teamwork, and decision-making skills.

Detailed information regarding the role's requirements can be found in the role profile, available upon request. Candidates should possess experience in the following areas (examples provided are illustrative; please refer to the role profile for comprehensive details):


• Stakeholder Engagement and Industrial Relations Experience, including managing complex stakeholder relationships, fostering consensus on challenging issues, understanding industrial relations and collective bargaining frameworks, and articulating the perspectives of scheme members effectively.


• Pension Industry Experience, such as serving as a pension trustee, being part of the management team of a defined benefit/defined contribution pension fund, or participating in a committee responsible for pension matters within a company or university.


• Oversight of Pensions Administration and Member Engagement, including experience in engaging scheme members and employers, developing educational and communication strategies for defined benefit and defined contribution services, and collaborating with outsourced pension administration service providers.


• Corporate Governance and Board Management Expertise, with experience as a board or committee member or operating at the board level (preferably within a large, complex organization or regulated entity); familiarity with corporate governance best practices and the Pension Regulator's codes of practice regarding effective pension fund trusteeship.

Time Commitment: A minimum of 35 days per year.

Duration: A four-year term, with the possibility of extension for one additional year (maximum five-year term). Following the term, there may be an opportunity for reappointment (directors may serve a maximum of nine years, consisting of two or more terms).
