Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Consultant in Ophthalmology to join our progressive and compassionate team. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with a group of six consultants and four specialty doctors, along with two Specialty Trainees and one Foundation Year 2 doctor.

Our department provides a comprehensive array of services, including general and acute ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, medical retina, diabetic eye care, glaucoma, cataract surgery, and corneal specialties. We operate across two locations, featuring a modern ophthalmology facility in the town center and a main hospital site equipped for day case, inpatient, and emergency procedures. We particularly welcome candidates with a sub-specialty interest, especially in cornea.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will deliver a Consultant Ophthalmology service for inpatients, day cases, and outpatients, maintaining ongoing responsibility for their patients. The role includes out-of-hours on-call duties, providing supervision and guidance to trainees or locally employed doctors on call.

The indicative job plan encompasses general ophthalmology work, with flexibility to incorporate a sub-specialty area aligned with the candidate's expertise and interests.

Additionally, the successful applicant will engage in educational responsibilities, contributing to the training of junior medical staff, nurses, and allied health professionals. Our department fosters a strong educational ethos, reflected in our teaching programs and departmental meetings.

Department Overview

The department consists of seven consultants (with one position currently vacant) and four Specialty Doctors, supported by three trainees. We also have four specialist nurses in advanced roles, along with allied health professionals in Orthoptist positions. Our team is further supported by an eye clinic liaison officer and a medical photography team.

We see approximately 44,000 patients annually in an outpatient capacity, with clinics covering various sub-specialties. Most outpatient services are conducted at our modern community health center, while surgical procedures primarily take place at the main hospital site, with a focus on day surgery under local anesthesia.

Our department boasts high success rates for cataract surgeries, exceeding national averages, and we utilize state-of-the-art surgical equipment to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

We conduct monthly departmental educational, governance, and clinical business meetings, alongside a robust weekly educational program that promotes teamwork and collaboration. Educational supervisors provide support to trainees, ensuring a comprehensive training experience.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential qualifications include:

  • MB ChB or equivalent primary medical qualification.
  • Full registration and a license to practice with the GMC.
  • CCT or CESR in Ophthalmology, or within six months of expected completion.

Desirable qualifications include evidence of sub-specialty training and a higher medical degree.
