An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and forward-thinking Senior Occupational Therapist to join the North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust as part of a rotational Band 6 position. About the Role

The post holder will be required to rotate on a 9-month basis in the following areas:

Enhanced Recovery:

Providing in-patient caseload coverage for surgical, orthopaedics elective, and trauma patients, as well as a service to the Orthopaedics Bone School.

Medical Specialties:

Delivering in-patient caseload coverage for medical wards.

Admission Avoidance Team:

Working as part of the team focusing on admission avoidance, rapid assessments, and signposting of patients in Accident and Emergency, Frailty Unit, and the Acute Medical Unit.

Acute Medicine for Older People:

Providing in-patient caseload coverage for the Medicine for Older People wards.

Acute Stroke Unit:

Working as a member of the Therapy Team covering a 20-bedded unit.

Main Responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Providing specialist occupational therapy assessment and intervention for allocated patient caseload in relevant clinical settings.
  • Providing support and clinical supervision to junior staff rotational band 5 occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and OT students on clinical placements.
  • Being an active member of the multidisciplinary team and participating in service developments, audits, and service reviews, as well as working collaboratively with other health and social care professionals in facilitating timely and safe discharges/preventing hospital admissions.
  • Deputising for the Team Leader in their absence.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A Diploma/Degree/Masters in Occupational Therapy.
  • HCPC registration.
  • Member of RCOT (desirable).

The candidate should demonstrate:

  • Evidence of understanding the needs of service-users and their carers, and the ability to explain the role of the OT to them.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant health and social care legislation.
  • Understanding and up-to-date knowledge of specialist adaptive equipment.
  • Understanding of the importance of clinical governance.
  • Demonstrable ability to meet Trust values.

The candidate should have:

  • Sufficient post-graduate OT practice, minimum of six months in a relevant clinical setting.
  • Experience in using standardized and structured assessments, and implementing specialized OT treatment approaches.
  • Experience of assessing for specialist adaptive equipment and minor adaptations, and evaluating effectiveness and safety.
  • Experience of goal setting and evaluating the outcomes of OT treatment.
  • Experience of working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, and identifying ways to facilitate effective team working.
  • Involvement in clinical audit and service improvement.
  • Experience of contributing to planning care in conjunction with service-users and other disciplines.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly (verbal and written) and to overcome barriers to communication.
  • Ability to manage own time and a clinical caseload, and describe ways of prioritizing work.
  • Understanding of issues involved in working in a diverse community, and practical ways to ensure OT practice is culturally appropriate and accessible.
  • Competent computer, word processing, and e-mail skills.
  • Understanding of the role of and process of clinical supervision.
  • Ability to identify professional training needs, and evidence of updating clinical skills.
