Biomedical Scientist/Biomedical Scientist Trainee

We are seeking a highly skilled Biomedical Scientist to join our team at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a Biomedical Scientist, you will play a crucial role in providing a comprehensive Point of Care Testing (POCT) service, ensuring the accurate and timely analysis of biological specimens.
Key Responsibilities:- Test Result Analysis: Provide timely and accurate test results using appropriate equipment, both automated and manual.
- Blood Sciences Analysis: Perform routine and specialist Blood Sciences analyses, validation, interpretation, and reporting of results.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain complex analytical equipment, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing downtime.
- Staff Supervision: Supervise, teach, advise, and inform all grades of staff, promoting a culture of excellence and continuous learning.
- Compliance: Comply with Standards of Proficiency for State Registration, maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to Caldicott principles.
- Technical Knowledge: Build upon your acquired technical and analytical knowledge, achieved through specialist training and experience.
- CPD: Maintain specialist technical and analytical knowledge by participating in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities.
- Registration: Maintain state registration with the Health Professions Council (HPC) by complying with Standards of Proficiency and Conduct.
- Standards of Work Practice: Ensure compliance with all local and national standards of work practice, including Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA).
- Specialized Procedures: Maintain the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform specialized procedures during rotation through highly specialized laboratories associated with a teaching hospital.
- Personnel Development: Participate in Personnel Development Plans and Appraisals, ensuring continuous growth and improvement.
- Sample Assessment: Assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples received, liaising with medical staff as necessary.
- Colleague Liaison: Deal sympathetically with colleagues, other healthcare professionals, and staff from external organizations.
- Communication: Use empathy and understanding to ensure that technical, clinical, and linguistic barriers to understanding are overcome.
- Negotiation: Negotiate with service users, resolving contentious issues that conflict with laboratory service targets.
- Result Explanation: Report and explain results to clinicians, biochemists, and other service users.
- Specialist Advice: Provide specialist advice to clinicians and other service users regarding specimen types, investigations required, and appropriateness of test and timing of collection of specimen and turnaround times.
- Specialist Knowledge: Use specialist knowledge across a range of procedures, authorizing test results, integrating, and initiating further tests as appropriate.
- Colleague Support: Take responsibility for finishing, checking, validating, and authorizing colleagues' work as necessary.
- Quality Control: Check validity and reliability of analytical processes, maintaining and monitoring satisfactory performance by internal quality control and external quality assessment to ensure accuracy and precision of POCT equipment.
- Material Handling: Manipulate materials and objects, such as microscopes and pipettes, for accurate and reliable determination of results.
- Quality Monitoring: Monitor Quality control and reagent logs in ward areas and utilize resources cost-effectively.
- Flexible Working: Participate in flexible working when the service demands, i.e., to accommodate early morning or late evening staff training sessions.
- Data Integrity: Ensure data integrity when entering demographics and results into the laboratory information system using specialized laboratory software.
- IT Support: Liaise with IT support in resolving any computer system difficulties.
- Consumable Management: Monitor and store consumables and reagents in appropriate conditions. Audit fridge/freezer temperature in POCT areas.
