Job Title: Assistant Head

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to join our team as Assistant Head of Digital Content Management. This is a key leadership role that will play a critical part in shaping the future of our digital collections.

About the Role

The Assistant Head will be responsible for supervising a team of Digital Collections Specialists and Technicians, providing administrative and technical supervision, and planning work to be accomplished by subordinates. The role will also involve establishing guidelines and performance expectations for staff, providing informal feedback and periodically evaluating employee performance, and resolving informal complaints and grievances.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Supervise a group of employees performing work up to the GS-13 level.
  2. Provide administrative and technical supervision relative to the staff supervised.
  3. Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
  4. Assign work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capabilities of employees.
  5. Observe workers' performance; demonstrate and conduct work performance critiques.
  6. Establish guidelines and performance expectations for staff and communicate these through the formal employee performance management system.
  7. Provide informal feedback and periodically evaluate employee performance.
  8. Resolve informal complaints and grievances.
  9. Recommend appointment, promotion, or reassignment and develop work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary.
  10. Serve as an expert in the organization, development, and implementation of multiple complex projects involving the lifecycle management of digital content.
  11. Lead working groups, task forces, committees or ad hoc groups assigned responsibility for specific digital lifecycle management projects or tasks.
  12. Coordinate the details involved in special projects, defining tasks/assignments.
  13. Identify, develop, and implement options for improving the performance of the plan/projects.
  14. Communicate orally and in writing to both technical and non-technical staff concerning the management of digital collection activities.
  15. Work with staff to develop solutions for transfer, processing, and managing a wide variety of digital content from varied acquisitions sources.
  16. Serve as product owner and/or subject matter expert for development projects to support the lifecycle management of digital content.
  17. Direct day-to-day operations of digital content management programs to ensure ongoing, efficient, and trustworthy ingest and processing of digital collection content.
  18. Manage ongoing operations and continuous improvement of practices to ensure enduring access to digital collections content.
  19. Manage reporting on the status of growth of processed and unprocessed digital collections.
  20. Advise top management on major issues related to the acquisition and lifecycle management of digital content.
  21. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff at multiple levels throughout the service unit and across the Library, as well as with those in the larger digital content management community.
  22. Using knowledge of digital libraries and technical solutions, provide expert analysis and advice and develop solutions to solve issues and problems associated with digital lifecycle management.
  23. Identify and apply new analytical techniques to address unique situations.
