Job Responsibilities

As a Maintenance Operator, your responsibilities will include:

  • Responding to urgent roadway situations and severe weather conditions, preparing and operating machinery for snow and ice clearance as well as addressing hazardous road conditions.
  • Participating in work zone training, setting up work zones, and executing traffic management protocols.
  • Implementing effective work site safety measures: recognizing workplace hazards, proposing enhancements, utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment, and staying updated on safety regulations and equipment usage.
  • Contributing as an active team member by performing manual tasks such as clearing drainage systems, brush cutting, pothole repairs, and other duties necessary for road maintenance projects.
  • Conducting pre-trip vehicle inspections, performing routine maintenance, and operating various power tools and equipment ranging from light to heavy machinery.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Familiarity with safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Understanding of highway maintenance tools, materials, and techniques.
  • Proven experience in operating equipment similar to that used in highway maintenance and construction.
  • Capability to perform strenuous manual labor, including frequently lifting items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficiency in the operation and upkeep of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card within 11 months of employment.
  • Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions and respond to emergencies, including after hours, weekends, and holidays.

Additional Considerations

  • Possession of a valid CDL or a CDL Learner's Permit.
  • Experience with heavy manual labor and operating heavy machinery.
  • Experience in performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
  • Experience in emergency response operations, including snow removal and accident cleanup.
  • Experience in operating a dump truck.
