Position Overview

We are currently seeking a dedicated individual for a fixed-term Band 4 Clinical Support Practitioner role within the growing Point of Care Testing (POCT) team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. This position offers a part-time commitment of 20 hours per week, primarily scheduled from Monday to Friday, with the expectation of participating in weekend or holiday shifts on a rotational basis, which will be included in the total hours worked. Enhanced compensation is provided for unsocial hours in accordance with established guidelines.

As a member of the Point of Care Testing team, you will engage with various instruments across multiple locations within the Trust. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys interacting with diverse staff members throughout the hospital environment. A valid driving license and access to a vehicle are essential for this position.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will assist the POCT team in the upkeep of blood gas analyzers across primary hospital sites and additional community venues. The team is responsible for managing a variety of equipment, including:

  • Blood Gas Analyzers
  • Full Blood Count Analyzers
  • Glucose & Ketone Meters
  • INR & D-Dimer Monitors
  • TEGs
  • HemoCue & HbA1c Analyzers
  • Pregnancy & Urinalysis Readers
  • Flu/ COVID-19 Testing Equipment

It is expected that the ideal candidate will possess a solid understanding of Point of Care Testing and its application within the healthcare sector.

Main Duties

The appointed individual will be an integral part of the Point of Care Testing (POCT) team, delivering an efficient, cost-effective, and timely service to equipment users. Responsibilities will include a diverse range of tasks within the POCT department to support clinical personnel in the analysis of biological samples. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to assist with breath test clinics.

The role requires independent work while adhering to relevant standard operating procedures as directed by the POCT Lead. Accurate record-keeping of activities is essential, and the candidate may be tasked with supervising, organizing, training, and delegating responsibilities to less experienced staff members. The position will be based at various hospital sites managed by University Hospitals Birmingham, with the expectation of covering community settings across the region. Flexibility in working across different locations is required.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE qualifications in English and Maths.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.

Desirable

  • Completion of a medical laboratory assistant competency portfolio or relevant experience in laboratory/POCT settings.

Experience

Essential

  • Familiarity with the National Health Service.
  • Understanding of the role of Medical Laboratories.
  • Awareness of Health and Safety protocols.
  • Evidence of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of Biomedical Science roles.
  • Customer care experience.

Desirable

  • Experience in clinical laboratories/POCT.
  • Familiarity with laboratory techniques and automation.
