Position Overview

The pharmacy department at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce a vacancy for a Senior Clinical Pharmacist specializing in Pain Management and Palliative Care. This role is a part-time, fixed-term position intended to cover maternity leave and is integral to our advancement towards higher levels of pharmacist practice.

The ideal candidate will engage collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver expert medication management, exemplary leadership, and innovative service enhancements. This position involves providing safe, effective, and economical pain and palliative care services to patients within the Trust and the broader integrated care network, bridging secondary and primary care.

We seek individuals who are enthusiastic, dedicated, and possess excellent interpersonal abilities. Candidates should be eager to embrace new challenges and demonstrate the initiative to effectively balance and manage the needs of specialized pain and palliative care teams, patients, caregivers, and other stakeholders.

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead, implement, and assess clinical pharmacy and medication management services across specialized pain and palliative care teams.
  • Ensure optimal medication management within pain and palliative care services, adhering to relevant professional, ethical, legal, and local policies and standards.
  • Provide direct clinical pharmacy services to a designated hospice for one session (4 hours) weekly.
  • Offer specialized pharmaceutical advice, guidance, and information regarding treatment options to multidisciplinary teams involved in pain and palliative care.
  • Participate actively in specialized ward rounds, clinics, and patient evaluations.
  • Deliver education and training to pharmacy staff and multidisciplinary teams within the pain and palliative care sectors.

Candidate Profile

Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Extensive experience in clinical pharmacy within a hospital environment
  • Experience in providing pharmacist services at the directorate level, including budgetary reports and drug usage evaluations
  • Development of protocols and policies
  • Strong professional relationships with other healthcare professionals
  • Involvement in relevant research, audit, and service enhancement projects
  • Participation in multidisciplinary service development

Desirable Criteria

  • Leadership and management experience
  • Experience in mentoring and training staff
  • Teaching experience in clinical and educational settings

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • Master's Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
  • Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent relevant postgraduate qualification
  • Pharmacist independent prescribing accreditation or actively pursuing this qualification
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and ongoing education

Desirable Criteria

  • Relevant postgraduate clinical qualification
  • Membership with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)
  • Working towards RPS advanced clinical practice or consultancy frameworks

Knowledge and Skills

Essential Criteria

  • Ability to apply theoretical knowledge in clinical settings
  • Involvement in the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines, policies, and protocols
  • Strong knowledge of medication information resources

Desirable Criteria

  • Membership in regional/national/international specialist interest groups relevant to the field
