An exceptional opportunity has emerged within the Theatres at Maidstone Hospital for a proactive, innovative, and highly driven individual to join our new Kent and Medway Orthopaedic Centre as a Surgical Support Assistant.
This new Centre is part of a national initiative aimed at establishing over 50 new surgical hubs across England, significantly enhancing our capacity for scheduled surgical procedures.
The facility will feature cutting-edge open-plan laminar flow theatres, designed to treat multiple patients in a dedicated space, equipped with specialized air canopies to minimize infection risks. Additionally, it will house a 14-bed inpatient ward and a 10-bed day case ward, along with recovery, x-ray, and therapy areas, all within a dedicated elective building.
The Kent and Medway Orthopaedic Centre will work in conjunction with our existing services to deliver exceptional care. Our esteemed Maidstone Orthopaedic Centre (MOU) and Maidstone Short Stay Unit (MSSU) will continue to operate alongside.
You will undergo structured training in this specialized field while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure a consistent and high standard of patient-centered care.
Key Responsibilities
- Safeguard the health, safety, and welfare of staff, patients, and visitors, while upholding patient privacy and dignity.
- Stay informed about legislation and policies governing theatre practices, particularly regarding universal precautions.
- Prepare theatres for surgical procedures.
- Clean theatre and recovery areas before and after surgical sessions, adhering to the established cleaning schedule.
- Restock cupboards and stock containers according to agreed inventory levels.
- Assist in collecting and escorting patients, aiding in their transfer from trolley to table under the supervision of trained personnel.
- Support the safe positioning of patients on the operating table.
- Act as a circulating person for the scrub team within the scope of the role.
- Assist with the care, labeling, and transportation of specimens, as well as the collection of blood from the Blood Bank as needed.
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with local policies, including the use of the Trust's IT systems.
- Dispose of soiled dressings, fluids, and linen in compliance with local policies.
- Uphold confidentiality, particularly regarding patient information and treatment.
- Facilitate effective communication between departments by acting as a messenger when necessary.
- Participate actively in the Clinical Governance agenda of the Trust.
- Attend departmental meetings as required.
- Collect data necessary for key performance indicators.

Job Responsibilities
Following the completion of your pre-employment checks, you will be contacted by Recruitment to arrange your start date, which will align with one of our Corporate Inductions.
After your Corporate Induction, you will be required to attend the Trust's Clinical Induction Programme for Clinical Support Workers, which commences on your first day of employment. This full-time programme lasts for two weeks and involves travel to both Trust sites. It includes two supernumerary shifts in the clinical area (one early and one late shift), with the remaining days being classroom-based from 9 am to 5 pm.
Please note that appointment to this position will be contingent upon a satisfactory Disclosure & Barring Service Check at the Enhanced Level, which now includes regulated checks against vulnerable adults and children.
