Job Overview

We are seeking a number of dedicated professionals to join our leadership team within the surgical theatres. This role presents an exciting opportunity to be part of theatre teams that require specialized knowledge in one of the General Surgical Specialties, along with proficiency in additional areas and a commitment to expanding your expertise.

You will possess the motivation, vision, and leadership qualities essential for guiding a successful multidisciplinary team. As a vital member of the senior team, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that high standards of care, staff support, and professional development are upheld within the theatre environment.

Opportunities will be provided for you to enhance your skills in theatre coordination and receive training as a Surgical First Assistant.

You must be a registered Nurse (NMC) or a registered Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC) with the capability to assist with anesthetics or a willingness to undertake the necessary training.

Key Responsibilities

- Assist and support the Clinical Operations Manager in the effective management and utilization of all theatre resources, and act as a deputy when required.

- Demonstrate appropriate managerial skills and knowledge to facilitate the efficient operation of the theatre complex, addressing substandard practices and escalating issues as necessary.

- Recognize the importance of personal development in relation to role expectations and the ongoing evolution of services, including internal competencies and academic leadership requirements.

- Independently manage material resources effectively, ensuring that stock and pharmacy supplies are consistently maintained.

- Plan electronic rosters in accordance with trust KPI requirements, identifying the necessary skills and manpower for the team.

- Understand budget formulation and contribute to cost improvement initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

- Contribute to the development and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures and Policies within the theatre complex, utilizing benchmarking, risk assessments, and best practice guidelines.

- Exhibit expertise in at least one theatre specialty and a willingness to become proficient in two additional areas, achieving competence across all.

- Ensure theatre practices comply with national, professional, and local standards.

- Maintain quality and safety, providing daily assurance and participating in auditing and peer reviews.

- Actively promote the sharing of best practices and dissemination of information following attendance at courses or study days through regular communications.

- Upon completion of appropriate training, undertake expanded roles within the clinical area, such as Surgical First Assistant and performing venepuncture and cannulation.

- Lead by example, demonstrating exemplary professional and clinical standards while empowering others.

- Foster a supportive environment conducive to learning for all staff and students, in line with mentorship qualifications.

- Demonstrate an understanding of accountability, effectively delegating tasks and referring to other professionals as needed.

- Advocate for patients and promote this role within the team.

- When necessary, act as an effective liaison to relevant groups.

- Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and external agencies as appropriate.

- Promote care that maintains the privacy and dignity of patients within the team.

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential

  • RGN or ODP
  • First degree or relevant experience
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD at relevant level
  • Management Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Leadership qualification or equivalent level of experience

Desirable

  • Master's Degree or working towards

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Extensive post-registration experience with a proven track record in senior operational/service management within the NHS related to Theatres
  • Experience in staff management
  • Positive experience in change management within an elective setting
  • Familiarity with a range of IT systems

Desirable

  • Experience in business planning and preparation of business cases
