Job Overview

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is in search of a highly skilled Senior Speech and Language Therapist to become a vital member of our dedicated Stroke and Neurology Team.

This position offers the opportunity to work within a supportive and well-established integrated therapy service, collaborating with experienced professionals. The role will primarily focus on the 24-bed Acute Stroke Unit, where you will engage with a cohesive and innovative multidisciplinary team. Your expertise will be essential in assisting patients with intricate communication and swallowing challenges, thereby enhancing their care and overall quality of life. Key Responsibilities

Conduct specialized evaluations and implement evidence-based interventions for individuals facing stroke-related communication and swallowing issues. Collaborate effectively within the multidisciplinary stroke team to provide integrated care, ensuring seamless communication and continuity across services.

Offer clinical leadership as part of a team of experienced senior Speech and Language Therapists working within specialized areas, including Health Services for Elderly People, General Medicine, Head and Neck Cancer, Voice / ENT, and Critical Care / Respiratory.

Engage in videofluoroscopy and FEES services to deliver comprehensive assessments and rehabilitation for dysphagia. Provide expert guidance, training, and support to patients, their families, and healthcare professionals regarding the management of speech, language, and swallowing disorders. Participate in clinical supervision, ongoing professional development, and research initiatives to enhance clinical skills and service quality. Ensure adherence to clinical governance frameworks, health and safety regulations, and safeguarding policies.

This role is pivotal in helping the service maintain its SSNAP standards, working closely with other therapy specialties and stakeholders. The team has established strong connections across the North Central London stroke network, including local ESD, community, and rehabilitation services.

Person Specification

Education & Professional Qualifications

Essential

Degree or graduate diploma in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent. Registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Speech and Language Therapist. Completion of certificated graduate courses or equivalent in-house training in clinical specialty areas. Membership in relevant special interest groups.

Desirable

Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

Comprehensive understanding of relevant clinical guidelines. Extensive clinical experience at a Band 6 level or above, including neurosciences, elderly care, and complex swallowing and communication. Proficiency in videofluoroscopy interpretation and clinical reporting. Experience in an acute hospital setting, collaborating within a multidisciplinary team. Experience in delivering presentations to diverse groups. Involvement in teaching or training staff or students. Supervision of junior staff, assistants, and students. Active participation in audits or quality improvement projects. Proficient in computer use, including Microsoft Office applications. Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable

Experience in tracheostomy management. Familiarity with FEES. Experience in line management of other allied health professionals.
