About the Role

Roxel UK is seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our team as a Design Authority. As a key member of our Design Authority Team, you will be responsible for leading the design and development of our rocket motors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design Evolution: Manage the evolution of our rocket motor designs to meet customer requirements.
  • Design Clearance: Ensure that all detail production drawings are cleared and conform to BS8888 and manufacturability standards.
  • DFMEA Leadership: Lead and complete Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to identify potential design flaws.
  • Process Approval: Approve production processes and tooling to ensure compliance with customer requirements.
  • Customer Compliance: Demonstrate compliance with customer requirements and specifications.
  • Analysis and Review: Specify and review structural, thermal, and ballistic analyses to ensure design integrity.
  • Supplier Review: Review key suppliers' methods of manufacture and control procedures to ensure quality and reliability.
  • Trial Specification: Specify, monitor, and report rocket motor trials to ensure design validation.
  • Trials Readiness: Lead trials readiness reviews to ensure all necessary preparations are in place.
  • EN9100 Compliance: Adhere to EN9100 processes, particularly the RD2 process, to ensure design and production certification.
  • Technical Presentations: Produce and deliver formal technical presentations to customers to communicate design and development progress.
  • Technical Reporting: Produce product technical specifications and detailed technical reports to document design and development activities.
  • Validation Testing: Ensure appropriate validation testing is carried out prior to formal qualifications.
  • Design Reviews: Lead formal design reviews at relevant design phases to ensure design integrity and compliance.
  • Certification: Responsible for design and production certification and producing a Certificate of Design for the rocket motor.
  • Customer Interface: Lead technical interface with customers, including missile prime contractors and end-users.
  • Technical Investigations: Lead technical investigations to resolve design and development issues.
  • Liaison and Communication: Liaise with all levels within the business, manufacturers, and suppliers to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
  • Trials Management: Arrange and manage specific trials, such as structural testing, rocket motor firings, and laboratory-scale testing.
Requirements
  • Qualifications: A formal qualification (degree or equivalent) in mechanical, aeronautical, or related engineering discipline.
  • Skills: A sound understanding of engineering principles, including mathematics, stressing, materials, and manufacturing techniques. An interest and aptitude in rocket motor design and development. Ability to assimilate and evaluate technical information from various disciplines. Attention to detail is paramount. Ability to present complex problems clearly and logically to other specialists and non-specialists. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Good understanding of DFMEA, 'Design to Cost', and 'Design for Manufacture' principles. Ability to communicate and work well with customers to meet their requirements and timescales. Good organizational skills and ability to work well under pressure. Computer literacy, including proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and other relevant software. Excellent document/report writing skills. Trials/assessment testing experience, such as structural testing, vibration, etc.
