Consultant in Palliative Care Medicine

Position Overview
This role is situated within the ambulatory palliative care framework, primarily focusing on urgent and scheduled outpatient evaluations. The successful candidate will provide essential guidance and support to our community and ambulatory nursing teams.
Work Schedule
The position entails a commitment of one day per week from 9 AM to 5 PM, with no on-call responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities include assisting patients and their caregivers who present to the medical ambulatory clinic. Depending on experience, the post-holder may collaborate with the Community Specialist Palliative Care teams to conduct crisis intervention home visits for patients wishing to receive care at home. Additionally, the post-holder will offer medical advice and support to the ambulatory hub team for one day per week, with guidance from senior colleagues, and will conduct both in-person and telephonic patient assessments in the ambulatory medical clinic.
Supervision and Development
The post-holder will operate under the mentorship of Consultants in Palliative Medicine and will be encouraged to engage in educational, audit, and research initiatives within the service.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Full GMC registration and license to practice
- A minimum of four years of full-time postgraduate training, including two years in relevant acute specialties (or equivalent experience)
- MBBS or equivalent qualification
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in Palliative Medicine, such as MRCP or equivalent
Skills and Knowledge
Essential
- Experience in Oncology and Palliative Medicine
- Proficiency in managing primary and secondary malignant diseases, as well as symptoms in non-malignant conditions
- Expertise in symptom control
- Able to conduct audits
- Understanding of quality governance principles
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and manage conflicts
- Exceptional communication skills with both patients and healthcare professionals
Desirable
- Experience in teaching basic palliative care skills to non-specialist clinical staff
- Core research skills and a commitment to fostering a research-oriented culture
