Role Summary

What is the opportunity?

As a Privacy Compliance Lead at the Royal Bank of Canada, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing our privacy framework by collaborating with various departments to ensure adherence to privacy regulations. This is a crucial and highly regarded position within the organization.

Your primary focus will be on the UK and Ireland, with opportunities to engage with Privacy professionals across the UK, Europe, and APAC regions, as well as colleagues in Canada and the US, as integration with our global parent company progresses.


Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a privacy subject matter expert, providing guidance and support to Data Protection Officers (DPOs) and the Head of Data Protection for the UK, Europe, and APAC, primarily focusing on the UK and Ireland.
  • Evaluate projects, initiatives, and services for privacy compliance, conduct Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), and advise on privacy by design principles while identifying and mitigating privacy risks.
  • Assist in the development and enhancement of the Global Privacy Program, ensuring compliance with relevant privacy laws, regulations, and internal policies, while fostering a culture of trust and respect for privacy.
  • Support regional DPOs in their regulatory responsibilities, representing them as necessary.
  • Collaborate with business units to identify, document, and manage privacy risks, providing recommendations for mitigation and reporting on risk status through formal risk management processes.
  • Help maintain the organization's Record of Processing Activities.
  • Coordinate responses to data subject rights requests, privacy inquiries, and complaints from clients and employees.
  • Advise on the management of data incidents and breaches in accordance with privacy legislation and organizational policies.

Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Strong background in privacy management, with solid experience and an ethical approach to data handling.
  • In-depth knowledge of data protection laws and regulations in the UK and/or Ireland, with practical experience in their application, including interaction with privacy regulators and clients.
  • Excellent organizational, documentation, and planning skills.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex privacy issues to non-expert audiences and building positive relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience in implementing cross-company privacy initiatives is preferred.


Desirable Skills

  • Experience in the Financial Services sector within a large multinational organization is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Familiarity with formal risk management processes is preferred.
  • Higher education qualifications such as A Levels or a Degree (or equivalent) are desirable.
  • Privacy certifications (e.g., CIPP/E or Practitioner Certificate) are highly regarded.
