Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged within our Paediatric Oncology Day Care unit for a senior leadership role. Our facility comprises a 6-chair/4-bedded area dedicated to managing outpatient services for patients with haematological and oncological conditions, including chemotherapy, diagnostic tests, and blood transfusions. We collaborate closely with the Oncology ward and outpatient services to provide outstanding care to cancer patients.

Our department has previously attained ANCC Pathway To Excellence accreditation, making us the only Children's Hospital in Europe to achieve this distinction. We are currently expanding on these achievements within Nottingham Children's Hospital.

Key Responsibilities

Ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care to patients. Collaborate with the Ward Manager to identify prevalent issues affecting care quality and develop actionable plans to address these challenges.

Work alongside the Ward Manager to guarantee a positive patient experience by assessing patient processes and care pathways.

Support the Ward Manager in conducting clinical audits in accordance with Trust requirements to enhance practice.

Act as a primary contact for patients, visitors, relatives, and staff, providing resources for inquiries and effectively communicating the patient's perspective.

Job Duties

Encourage staff involvement in resource management through effective utilization of clinical and non-clinical supplies while understanding financial implications.

Contribute to time-limited committees and project groups.

Ensure that relevant information is maintained appropriately, with accurate records kept in line with Trust and national policies.

Act as a key agent of change within the clinical area in response to incidents and demands.

Participate in the acting-up rota as necessary, holding the directorate/floor bleep as required.

Assist the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in developing and managing work rosters that ensure safe staffing levels.

Guarantee the provision of high-quality, evidence-based care to patients, collaborating with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to identify common issues affecting care quality and formulating clear action plans to address them.

Enhance and maintain standards of essential nursing care by collaborating with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse and utilizing tools such as clinical benchmarking. Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in ensuring clinical audits are conducted in accordance with Trust requirements to improve practice.

Work with the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to identify clinical and non-clinical risks and conduct necessary risk assessments.

Foster a culture that emphasizes the importance of clinical and non-clinical governance within the ward or department.

Alongside the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse, assist the team in completing risk assessments and developing action plans to ensure a safe environment for high-quality patient care.

Ensure that all nursing documentation is regularly reviewed and updated, implementing necessary changes. Engage in continuous professional development relevant to your field of practice and enhance your competencies in line with personal development plans, including leadership skills and empowering other team members.

Promote a learning culture where students receive quality clinical placements supported by mentorship, teaching, and guidance from registered nurses.

Support the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse in sharing best practices with colleagues across the directorate, division, and Trust.

Assist staff in utilizing clinical information within the ward or department to enhance patient care quality. Encourage staff participation in service changes and developments through established processes within the directorate/division.

Demonstrate clear communication lines within the clinical area, ensuring responsibilities are well-defined within the multi-professional team.

Create an environment where staff have appropriate authority over issues that impact essential care and empower them to achieve the highest quality standards.

Assist in establishing, motivating, and developing the clinical team with a clear focus and direction. Keep the clinical team informed of the policies, direction, and strategy of the directorate and division. Take an active role in self-development and identifying personal needs, taking appropriate steps to address them.

Essential

  • NMC - Child
  • 2 Years post-registration experience
  • Proven management experience

Experience

  • Experience at band 5 for a minimum of 3 years
  • Evidence of ability to mentor

  • Recent or current experience within the specialty
