Mental Health Practitioner

The successful candidate will be a key member of the CAMHS Service, working within the Youth Justice Service to provide mental health assessments and interventions for vulnerable children and young people. This role involves early intervention, ensuring access to mental health advice and support, and navigating local mental health systems. The post holder will also provide advice, training, and consultation to YJS staff, parents, and other agencies.
Main Responsibilities- Conduct high-quality mental health assessments for children and young people referred to YJS.
- Identify the need for assessment through liaison with the Police, Courts, Probation, YJS, CAMHS, and other relevant agencies.
- Provide access to a range of psychotherapeutic interventions, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Offer consultation to YJS practitioners.
- Provide clinical and managerial supervision to the CAMHS team.
- Work as a co-therapist with other MDT members.
- Manage a complex caseload and undertake case management responsibilities.
- Contribute to the development of the Oldham CAMHS Youth Justice Care Pathway.
The Oldham CAMHS Youth Justice care pathway is a targeted service for children and young people who are open to the service. It provides a consultation, assessment, and treatment care pathway for those identified as having mental or emotional health difficulties. The pathway has been developed in line with the Greater Manchester Thrive Framework for system change.
Job Responsibilities- Identify and develop strategies to manage risk to the child/young person and others in line with Pennine Care and CAMHS/YJS procedures and protocols.
- Undertake liaison and joint work with other agencies.
- Provide advice and support to the YJS manager on developing services to meet the mental health needs of young offenders.
- Offer consultation and training on children/young people's emotional health and well-being issues to professionals from various services.
- Routinely monitor the effectiveness of clinical work using Routine Outcome Measures (ROM) and engage in clinical review via peer review meetings and supervision.
- Be based across the YJS and Oldham CAMHS sites, available for consultation and advice to YJS colleagues.
Education/Qualifications
Essential
- Professional qualifications relevant to work in child and adolescent mental health nursing, social work, or clinical psychology to masters level or equivalent experience.
- Specialist post-qualification training in psychological therapy with children and families to at least postgraduate diploma level.
- Accreditation with the appropriate accrediting bodies governing the specific modality.
Desirable
- Additional postgraduate qualifications relevant to child mental health.
- Additional accredited training.
Experience
Essential
- Experience of working with children, young people who have been involved with the youth justice system.
- Experience of working with children, young people, and their families presenting with mental health concerns/problems.
- Experience of working in a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) setting.
- Managing a caseload.
- Experience of providing evidence-based psychological therapy to children and young people and their families.
- Experience of providing clinical supervision and line management to team members.
- Experience of using ROM.
- Experience of teaching and liaising with other professional groups.
- Significant experience working in a multi-agency context.
Desirable
- Working in a service where agreed targets are in place demonstrating clinical outcomes.
Knowledge
Essential
- Theoretical approach and understanding of child and young people's mental health and development.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and government policy relating to children and young people's mental health.
- Child protection knowledge and practice.
- Specific theoretical knowledge related to therapeutic specialty.
- Understanding of principles and methods of clinical audit, research, and service evaluation.
- Understanding of the current multi-agency landscape, including public sector reform.

Essential
- Ability to work in partnership with children, young people, parents/carers, colleagues, and other agencies.
- Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing complex and sensitive information to children, young people, and families/carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
