You will be a qualified professional, such as a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Learning Disability Nurse, Occupational Therapist, or Social Worker with a focus on Mental Health.

LaDS is a comprehensive service catering to individuals of all ages and vulnerabilities, operating within Police Custody Suites and Courts in the designated area. Our assessment service collaborates closely with law enforcement and other Criminal Justice System professionals to ensure effective pathways for individuals in custody who may be vulnerable or experiencing mental health challenges.

Our work involves engaging with service users facing a variety of vulnerabilities, requiring you to confidently assess diverse needs in potentially challenging situations. You must be equipped to support individuals undergoing mental health crises, learning disabilities, substance misuse, and extreme emotional distress.

Key Responsibilities

The primary objective of this role is to facilitate the following:

Job Duties

Core Responsibilities

Key Result Areas

- Attend Court to conduct mental health assessments, provide guidance, and identify appropriate care pathways for individuals with identified mental health needs.

- Deliver timely written information to the Court regarding individuals to inform case disposal.

- Prepare comprehensive health and social circumstance reports as required within specified timeframes.

- Collaborate closely with all referring agencies within the Court, serving as a primary contact for health-related matters.

- Address the Court in person when necessary to advise on case disposal and care pathways.

- Refer individuals to suitable services based on their identified needs.

- Make recommendations to the Court regarding the involvement of the criminal justice system or potential diversion.

- Develop a solid understanding of the Mental Health Act in relation to the Courts and the criminal justice system.

- Facilitate Mental Health Act assessments at the Court when diversion is indicated, in collaboration with AWP Assessment teams.

- Refer to prison mental health teams when custody is indicated, ensuring appropriate information is shared along the care pathway.

- Provide specialized advice and services to Probation and custody suites as needed.

- Supply mental health information to Probation for the formulation of pre-sentence reports when a potential mental health need is identified.

- Adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.

- Communicate effectively with a diverse group of service users.

- Work independently, managing your time according to delegated responsibilities and taking accountability for your professional practice.

- Demonstrate a solid understanding of the Integrated Care Programme Approach (ICPA), including the ability to formulate risk assessments and management plans.

- Provide formal and informal clinical supervision to junior staff, students, and mental health workers as appropriate and in agreement with the team manager.

- Support the efficient operation of the team, including covering for the Team Manager in their absence as required.

Qualifications

  • Registered as a mental health practitioner with relevant professional qualifications.
  • Current registration with NMC or HCPC without restrictions.
  • Experience working with individuals with complex and diverse needs, including enduring mental health conditions and dual diagnosis.

Experience

  • Significant post-qualifying clinical experience across various settings.
  • Demonstrates substantial experience in assessing and managing complex cases.

Desirable

  • Experience within the criminal justice system.

  • Proven ability to manage a personal caseload and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Capability to conduct assessments requiring sustained concentration in high-pressure situations.
