Job Overview

As a Porter in the Facilities Department at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, you will play a vital role in providing a comprehensive service to the hospital. You will work as a team member with a flexible approach, undertaking scheduled and unscheduled movement of patients and materials as required. This will involve complying with current legislation and any other duties commensurate with the grading of the post.

Main Responsibilities
  • Confidentiality and Communication
    • Maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff, and other health service business in accordance with Trust Policy.
    • Aid Hospital staff, visitors, and patients when faced with difficult situations caused by third parties, following Trust policies and procedures.
    • Guide and direct visitors and deal with them in a helpful and friendly manner, taking written notes of any relevant information.
    • Communicate sensitive information using tact and diplomacy when dealing with deceased's family and friends.
  • Analytical and Judgemental Skills
    • Communicate daily with all users regarding any variation in service that may be required. Using judgement to prioritise as necessary in consultation with the Portering and Waste Supervisor.
    • Assess how to safely transport hospital equipment and utilise appropriate manual handling techniques.
    • Ability to identify certain pieces of equipment when transferring from Equipment Library to Wards, such as infusion pumps.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
    • Attend daily briefing meeting with the Waste and Portering Supervisor, and liaise with other Supervisors.
    • Respond to the emergency Bleep for fire, medical emergency, major obstetric haemorrhage, deploying staff appropriately.
    • Ability to assess Health and Risk requirements, such as manual handling and additional mechanical aids if necessary.
