Software Development Support Officer

The University of Glasgow's School of Health and Wellbeing is seeking a highly skilled Software Development Support Officer to join its Electrocardiology Core Laboratory team. As a key member of the Software Development Group, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the world-leading software used to interpret over 25 million electrocardiograms (ECGs) annually worldwide.
Main Duties and Responsibilities- Contribute to the Development of ECG Interpretation Software: Make a significant contribution to the further development and enhancement of software for automated ECG interpretation, with a focus on using Machine Learning tools for ECG classification.
- Software Maintenance and Testing: Independently maintain, test, evaluate, and debug program code to ensure accuracy, completeness, and system operating proficiency.
- Analysis and Interpretation of ECG Results: Undertake detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis and interpretation of experimental results related to automated ECG interpretation.
- Publication Preparation: Assist with the preparation of results of ECG analyses for inclusion in scientific publications.
- Process Review and Improvement: Review systems and processes in selected aspects of automated ECG interpretation, analyze areas for improvement, and recommend revised diagnostic approaches where required.
- Machine Learning and AI Expertise: Stay up-to-date with the use of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in automated ECG interpretation and advise team members on developments in this area.
- Collaboration and Documentation: Work with colleagues and external parties to develop novel software for further experimentation in diagnostic methods and assist with the preparation of documentation related to compliance with IEC and ISO 9001:2015.
- Quality Management and Auditing: Participate in the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System and take a significant role in auditing and being audited in compliance with the Quality Management System.
- IT Team Culture and SOPs: Contribute to the overall IT team culture and participate in the creation, development, and review of SOPs where relevant.
- Liaison and Database Development: Liaise with non-IT colleagues to discuss potential system improvements and ensure compliance with technical and professional standards, and assist in the building of databases of selected ECG abnormalities.
- University IT Regulations: Become familiar with University IT regulations and undertake a variety of tasks as required by the Software Development Manager.
- A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4) in mathematics, computing science, or a science-related subject.
- Extensive knowledge of a high-level programming language, e.g., C, C++, as well as Linux and Windows OS.
- B1 An understanding of signal processing, including concepts related to filtering.
- B2 Knowledge of database design and use.
- B3 Knowledge of web-based applications, development software, and methodologies.
- B4 Basic knowledge of Machine Learning methods for diagnostic use.
- C1 Ability to work under pressure while maintaining high professional standards.
- C2 Ability to work as a team member.
- C3 Ability in using program design methods and programming techniques.
- C4 Organisational and time-management skills, prioritizing tasks to ensure the right things are done at the right time.
- C5 Ability to apply existing knowledge to new areas of IT.
- C6 Ability to maintain a professional, courteous, and patient manner when assisting and supporting users with differing IT knowledge.
- C7 Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills and an aptitude for training customers in the use of software applications.
- C8 Well-developed ability to adopt a methodical and logical approach to software design, structure, and implementation.
- C9 Ability to work independently when required.
- D1 Ability to develop skills in response to technological change within the area.
- E1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
- E2 Relevant experience of development of software, ideally in a language such as C.
- E3 Experience of writing software user documentation and providing user training.
