About the Role
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Science Strategist to join our team. As a key member of our Environment team, you will play a crucial role in identifying and developing our Environment strategy, engaging stakeholders, and supporting the delivery of impactful science.
Purpose of the Role
- Conduct strategic analytical research to support the further development of our Environment strategy and/or programmes, focusing on specific topics, sectors, or industries to understand challenges and identify measurement needs that can be addressed through NPL science.
- Engage with stakeholders to develop NPL points-of-view and positions, involving literature searches and external interactions/conferences in new areas to identify future research or business development potential for NPL.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the delivery of strategic research projects that provide new insights to strategy, business development, or science research, including scoping, desktop research, stakeholder engagement, and synthesizing conclusions and recommendations.
- Conduct strategic analytical desk research to pull together policy, market, technical, and scientific inputs, identifying new insights and challenges relevant to NPL measurement science.
- Develop relationships and raise the profile of NPL in the Environment arena through content-driven engagement with external stakeholders, liaising with marketing to provide knowledge and content for external outputs.
- Support Strategic Business Development managers for knowledge and analytical content needs, particularly in new funding streams and opportunities to NPL.
- Support the Head of Challenge in the development and refinement of the challenge strategy.
- Take reasonable duty of care for Health & Safety.
Key Skills and Knowledge Required

- Analytical skills and critical thinking, with the ability to learn, identify, and analyze large amounts of new information, synthesize, distill, structure, find trends, and insights, sometimes from incomplete data.
- Commercial/business knowledge and mindset.
- Leadership skills and team player, with the ability to lead projects and work with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and experience levels.
- Strong communication skills, verbal and written, with experience in producing reports, papers, and other project-related written delivery work.
- A degree in science is strongly preferred, and financial skills are also preferred.
