Job Summary

The National Organiser (Broadcasting) will serve as a key figure in the National Union of Journalists, leading the department responsible for broadcasting members. This role will require strong organizational and negotiating skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with various stakeholders, including union members, employers, and other organizations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Member Liaison and Support
    • Establish and maintain strong relationships with broadcasting members, providing guidance and support as needed.
    • Conduct regular meetings and conferences to gather information and address collective and individual concerns.
  • Recruitment and Retention
    • Develop and implement effective recruitment strategies to attract and retain broadcasting journalists.
    • Work closely with lay reps and activists to establish and organize chapels in consultation with the Broadcasting Industrial Council (BIC) and other organizations.
  • Negotiations and Collective Agreements
    • Negotiate collective agreements, pay claims, and represent the interests of broadcasting members in cooperation with other organizers.
  • Advice and Information Services
    • Provide comprehensive written reports to the National Executive Council (NEC) on industrial and workplace issues.
    • Servicing of the union's elected Broadcasting Industrial Council (BIC) and other committees, councils, or group chapels as directed by the General Secretary.
  • Lobbying and Campaigning
    • Lobby and campaign on key policy issues affecting broadcasting journalists in the private sector and throughout public service broadcasting.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Liaise with other NUJ sectors and their organizers, as well as the Scottish, Irish, and Northern offices of the NUJ.
    • Liaise with other media unions and organizations on key issues.
  • Managerial Responsibilities
    • Line management of the BBC secondees and ensuring the efficient delivery of BBC secondee support across London and the Nations and Regions.
    • Day-to-day initial authorization of broadcasting membership expenses, dealt with in accordance with the NUJ payment policy procedure and with full oversight of the Head of Finance & Membership.
  • Training Responsibilities
    • Facilitate and tailor Trade Union training for broadcasting members via the union's central training programme.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience
    • Education to degree level and/or at least five years of trade union experience.
  • Skills and Qualifications
    • Experience of the current media industry and knowledge of the issues facing broadcasting workers across the different parts of the industry.
    • Proven organizational and negotiating skills, preferably in a trade union context and experience working/negotiating with employer organizations and associated bodies.
    • Proven experience of establishing and implementing recruitment and organizing strategies.
    • Experience of working within a committee structure and of servicing meetings.
    • Ability to carry out research and preparation of documentation, as required.
    • Ability to deal sympathetically and efficiently with collective and individual problems and grievances, and to represent individual workers and chapels effectively, where necessary.
    • Ability to communicate with members using both traditional means and current electronic communications.
    • Familiarity with current media technologies used by members.
    • Prioritizing and working to deadlines.
    • Ability to work on own initiative and in a flexible manner to respond to urgent or immediate issues.
    • Working understanding of equal opportunities practices and legislation.
    • Ability to inform and motivate members of staff working directly to them; to work as a team harmoniously and collectively with their colleagues and union members.
Working Arrangements

This role will have a minimum of 3 days in the London office and the remaining 2 days working from your permanent residence. There may be a requirement to work 5 days in the office, dependant on organisational needs.
