Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Laboratory Support Technician to become a vital member of our specimen reception team within the Blood Sciences Pathology Department. This position offers both permanent and temporary opportunities.

As part of our pathology laboratories, you will collaborate with the team to manage the receipt and pre-analytical processing of pathology samples, ensuring they are efficiently forwarded to our specialized departments.

The role requires flexibility in working various shifts throughout a 24-hour cycle to assist technical staff in maintaining a safe and effective service. Availability for evening, weekend, and night shifts is essential.

We are looking for a healthcare professional who can adapt to the evolving landscape of pathology services and effectively represent our new initiatives.

Comprehensive training will be provided; however, prior knowledge of pathology is advantageous.

For temporary positions, internal candidates currently employed by our organization will be considered for secondment, which must be discussed with their line manager.

  • Receiving samples, assigning identification numbers, and entering data into the computer system.
  • Identifying, addressing, and reporting mislabelled or misplaced specimens, as well as unsuitable samples or process failures.
  • Assisting in the daily management of stock control and usage.

Person Specification

Education

Essential

  • GCSEs in Maths and English (A-C) or equivalent qualifications.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable knowledge of a variety of routine and non-routine healthcare science tasks equivalent to an NVQ level 3/diploma.

Desirable

  • Practical experience in a Biomedical Science laboratory.
  • Familiarity with Pathology IT systems.
  • Understanding of Quality Management Systems.
  • Previous relevant experience within the NHS.

Skills and Aptitude

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Willingness to engage in cross-training to broaden skill sets.
