About the Role
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our team as a BioDeuteration Support Scientist Industrial Placement. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, contributing to cutting-edge research in bio-deuteration support science.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce deuterated recombinant proteins in bacteria and other systems.
- Research the feasibility of production of perdeuterated cholesterol and make initial steps towards its production.
- Analyze produced biomolecules using equipment and facilities at ISIS, Research Complex at Harwell, and Central Laser Facilities.
- Participate actively in experimental design, analysis, and troubleshooting.
- Produce and analyze experimental data.
- Clearly document findings and report them at internal and external meetings.
- Support the ISIS Biology Laboratories Manager in maintaining the BioLab facilities' safety, cleanliness, and functionality.
- Maintain Health and Safety standards in the labs.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete the undergraduate degree following the placement.
- Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year.
- Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement.
- Able to commence employment in summer.
- Undergraduate course in Life Sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or any other related subject.
- Demonstrable wet laboratory experience, such as making buffers and solutions, chemical reactions, growing cells, production and analysis of proteins, enzymes, RNA, DNA, lipids, or similar experience.
- Enjoy laboratory environment and laboratory work.
- Excellent practical skills, enquiring mind, and ability to fix and troubleshoot.
- Good understanding of Health and Safety in the Biological Laboratory.
- Interest in cell culture, preparation of bio-samples, and studying soft matter (cells, proteins, lipids) using neutron beam lines, or either.
Desirable
- Experience of culturing live cells (bacteria, yeast, mammalian, or insect cells).
- Previous successful completion of a scientific experiment/project.
- Experience of writing COSHH forms and doing Risk Assessments.
