Role Overview

The Protection Design Engineer plays a crucial role within our design team, focusing on the delivery of substation plant, equipment, and protection systems. This position encompasses a wide array of electrical infrastructures and new connection projects in both distribution and transmission sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess client project needs and develop comprehensive specifications for plant and protection equipment.
  • Design systems that comply with relevant specifications and tender documentation, coordinating with manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Support tendering processes and provide technical guidance for proposed schemes as necessary.
  • Create site layouts and schematics for multi-stage substation construction projects.
  • Manage relationships with external manufacturers and design consultants, ensuring design outputs meet electro-technical requirements.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams, clients, and consultancies to produce precise designs within established timelines.
  • Generate detailed electrical control and protection schematic drawings for large-scale electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Develop electro-technical drawings, procurement lists, and wiring diagrams for control and protection systems.
  • Prepare functional specifications and liaise with manufacturers to procure equipment according to client specifications.
  • Create detailed specifications for high voltage plant and ancillary equipment associated with substations.
  • Review proposals from equipment manufacturers to ensure compatibility with design requirements.
  • Produce equipment schedules in accordance with IEC, DNO, ENA, IDNO, and client specifications.
  • Develop and review single line diagrams, protection and control block diagrams, and connection diagrams.
  • Create AC and DC schematic drawings, control and protection diagrams, and cable block diagrams.
  • Maintain effective communication with suppliers and customers regarding technical and commercial matters.
  • Ensure robust technical documentation management and change control processes are in place.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong understanding of electricity industry standards and regulations relevant to the role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical plant, transformers, protection systems, and current engineering standards.
  • Proven experience in substation construction, cabling, and overhead line projects, with expertise in switchgear and protection design.
  • Familiarity with power systems, renewable energy, and protection design across various voltage levels.
  • Ability to translate project briefs into detailed designs based on applicable standards.
  • Educational background at degree level or equivalent in a relevant field.
