The role of the Protection Design Engineer is crucial within our design team. This position entails the comprehensive design and delivery of substation infrastructure, equipment, and protection systems across various electrical networks, including both distribution and transmission projects.
Key responsibilities include the meticulous design and procurement of substation components such as switchgear, power transformers, voltage regulation devices, protection systems, and telemetry solutions. The engineer will oversee all associated activities throughout the project lifecycle.
Core Responsibilities
- Evaluate client project specifications and develop detailed plant and equipment protection criteria.
- Design systems that comply with relevant specifications and coordinate with manufacturers and suppliers.
- Support tendering processes and provide ongoing technical insights for proposed projects.
- Create site layouts and schematics for multi-phase substation construction projects.
- Manage relationships with external manufacturers and design consultants to ensure design outputs meet electro-technical standards.
- Collaborate with internal and external teams, clients, and consultancies to deliver precise designs within specified timelines.
- Generate detailed electrical control and protection schematics for large-scale electrical infrastructure projects.
- Develop electro-technical drawings, procurement lists, and wiring diagrams for control and protection systems.
- Prepare functional specifications and advise on plant procurement, liaising with manufacturers to fulfill client specifications.
- Produce comprehensive specifications for high voltage equipment and related ancillary systems.
- Review proposals from equipment manufacturers to ensure alignment with design requirements.
- Create equipment schedules in accordance with relevant IEC, DNO, ENA, IDNO, and client specifications.
- Develop and assess single line diagrams, protection and control block diagrams, and connection diagrams.
- Produce AC and DC schematic drawings, control and protection diagrams, and cable block diagrams.
- Maintain effective communication with suppliers and clients regarding technical matters.
- Ensure robust documentation management and change control practices are upheld.
Qualifications and Skills
- In-depth understanding of electricity industry standards and regulations relevant to the role.
- Strong knowledge of electrical plant, transformers, protection systems, and current engineering standards.
- Proven experience in substation construction, cabling, and overhead line projects, with familiarity in switchgear and protection design.
- Solid understanding of power systems, renewable energy, and protection design across all voltage levels.
- Ability to translate project briefs into detailed designs adhering to appropriate standards.
- Competence in preparing single-line diagrams for complex substation projects.
- A degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience is required.
