Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant to join our team at The Golden Jubilee Regional Spinal Cord Injury Centre at The James Cook University Hospital. This is a replacement appointment to join existing colleagues in a purpose-built centre integrated within a major trauma centre with full supporting facilities.

About the Role

The Regional Spinal Cord Injuries Centre serves a geographically based catchment in the North of England, from the Scottish Border down to the Lake District and Scarborough, with a population of over 1 million. The centre has 4 HDU (two ventilated) and 20 rehabilitation beds, and runs outreach clinics with geographically based outreach specialist nursing and rehabilitation staff. The centre is supported by a specialist urologist, a specialist plastic surgeon, a hand surgeon, an intensivist, and a spinal surgical and neurosurgical team, as well as psychological support, a dedicated social worker, an IT specialist, and audit support.

Main Responsibilities

The main priority for this post will be to deliver high-quality patient outcomes through leading the multi-disciplinary team managing spinal cord injured patients. The post holder will take a lead role within the team, working closely with colleagues to provide comprehensive care to patients. The post is based within the Spinal Cord Injuries Centre at The James Cook University Hospital, which serves a regional population of over 1 million.

Requirements
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP (rehab) or equivalent specialist qualification
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent ('equivalence' must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of AAC)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Training in appraisal techniques
  • Leadership skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GP's, nurses, and other agencies
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
  • Resident within 10 miles or 30 minutes of the hospital
What We Offer

The James Cook University Hospital is a major tertiary and teaching centre with over 1,000 beds, serving a largely urban population. It provides comprehensive regional specialties, including Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT, and Ophthalmic Surgery. The hospital is a regional centre for Spinal Cord Injury, Upper GI, and Vascular Surgery, and all other major specialties are catered for. The Friarage Hospital, Northallerton, serves a population of 120,000 covering 1,000 sq miles of rural North Yorkshire, and provides local medical services for the area.
