Principal Systems Engineer

Role Overview:

We are seeking a Principal Systems Engineer who will be an integral and proactive member of our team, responsible for the successful technical execution of complete project solutions within the defined scope, adhering to company protocols while meeting budgetary and timeline objectives.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership by effectively delegating tasks among team members, supervising their progress, and providing guidance to the project manager regarding advancements, risks, and challenges.

The Principal Engineer will collaborate closely with the Project Manager and engineering team to ensure seamless project advancement in alignment with the established project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the technical delivery of projects
  • Collaborate with and assist the Project Manager in all facets of project technical delivery and scope management
  • Assign tasks to the engineering team and track their progress
  • Ensure compliance with technical and quality standards of projects
  • Uphold project adherence to company quality processes and protocols
  • Identify opportunities and variations within projects
  • Aid the Project Manager in recognizing and managing risks and challenges
  • Promote the use of reusable modules through standardization and modularization of systems when applicable
  • Engage in prototyping of innovative technologies
  • Plan and support training initiatives
  • Mentor junior engineers
  • Assist the Automation sales and proposals teams
  • Contribute to departmental business development efforts
  • Demonstrate leadership in Health and Safety practices
Main Functions:

The Principal Engineer is typically expected to undertake the following:
  • Participate in the sales to project handover process
  • Engage in the initial engineering review
  • Support the Project Manager in developing the Quality Assurance plan
  • Assist in creating the project Gantt chart
  • Help develop the initial task and procurement list
  • Continuously update detailed task and procurement lists
  • Conduct peer reviews of documents produced by the project team or other teams
  • Attend contract meetings with the project manager as necessary
  • Conduct site surveys as required
  • Perform outline design, preliminary design studies, and requirement definitions for clients
  • Develop Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
  • Create Detailed Design Specifications (DDS)
  • Formulate test specifications and design testing methodologies
  • Develop project modules, including PLC code modules, SCADA scripts, mimics, communication drivers, etc.
  • Generate site work documentation with team input as needed (risk assessments, method statements, site test documentation)
  • Create Operations & Maintenance (O&M) documentation
  • Conduct comprehensive integrated system testing, including CFAT, SAT, and installation
  • Manage observations, variations, and reworks
  • Oversee packing and shipping of the system
  • Facilitate site installation
  • Conduct site retesting
  • Provide warranty support as necessary
Experience & Qualifications:

A minimum of 5 years' experience in developing integrated control system solutions is required.

Essential experience includes:
  • In-depth knowledge of the complete project lifecycle from system specification through design, development, testing, and on-site commissioning
  • Practical experience with PLC and SCADA systems (Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider, AVEVA, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of control panels, electrical installations, and instrumentation solutions
  • A degree or HND/HNC in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Control Systems, or a related field
  • Chartered Engineer status or progress towards professional registration
