About Us

At the 11th (Royal School of Signals) Signal Regiment, located in Dorset, we provide top-tier technical training in IT and Communications Information Systems to military personnel across various engineering disciplines. Our mission is to equip Defence members with the necessary skills for their roles as IT and CIS engineers.

As part of the Defence School of Communications and Information Systems, we are committed to delivering comprehensive technical training to meet the operational needs of the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force. This role entails a commitment of 37 hours per week.

Role Responsibilities

The 11th (RSS) SR is in search of technical experts who can effectively contribute to a high-performing team. Your primary responsibility will be to instruct Defence personnel through technical training programs designed to cultivate their skills as engineers and technicians.

Successful candidates will engage in teaching military students across a variety of theoretical and practical subjects within Information Technology and Communications Information Systems. We are particularly interested in individuals with an academic or technical background in these fields who are looking to transition into a teaching role. Comprehensive training will be provided to facilitate this transition.

We currently have openings for Burnham Lecturers (BLs) in the following areas:

  • Networking (CISCO)
  • Operating Systems (Microsoft, CompTIA)
  • Engineering Principles and Practices

As a BL, your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering technical training in accordance with established specifications.
  • Creating a dynamic, safe, and inclusive learning atmosphere.
  • Developing lesson plans and supporting materials that promote student-centered learning, integrating Literacy and Numeracy as required.
  • Ensuring compliance with responsibilities towards students with Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) or Specialist Educational Needs.
  • Serving as a role model and maintaining high standards of conduct as per Defence Trainer and Civil Service Codes.
  • Monitoring student welfare and addressing any concerns through the appropriate channels.
  • Acting as an examination invigilator and ensuring that all necessary accommodations are provided.
  • Identifying discrepancies and assisting in the review of examination materials.
  • Engaging in continuous improvement by maintaining expertise in your subject area and completing a minimum of 5 hours of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) annually.
  • Participating in internal and external evaluations as necessary.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates should possess a degree in a STEM discipline and a level 5 teaching qualification, although exceptions may be made under certain circumstances. Support for achieving these qualifications may be available.

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, self-driven, and capable of inspiring young service members from diverse backgrounds. Strong communication skills are essential for conveying complex information clearly to various audiences.

Proficiency in one or more of the following areas is required:

  • Networking (CISCO-CCNA, CCNP)
  • Operating Systems (Microsoft Server and Exchange)
  • Engineering Principles and Practices
  • Software Development and Automation
