Position Overview

The Governance Support Team comprises a dedicated group of officers who engage with school leaders and governance chairs to arrange meetings throughout the academic calendar, providing essential procedural and legal advice as necessary. Daily responsibilities may include:

  • Coordinating three meetings per educational institution each academic year (approximately 24 meetings per term for full-time equivalents).
  • Developing agendas for governing board meetings.
  • Documenting meeting minutes, whether conducted virtually or on-site.
  • Maintaining a comprehensive database for school governing bodies.
  • Advising and assisting school governors in fulfilling their statutory duties and ensuring the effective operation of governing boards.

Prior experience in governance is not a prerequisite, as we provide thorough training. This role is particularly suited for individuals who:

  • Desire a position that allows for flexible scheduling, including evening hours to align with personal commitments.
  • Are interested in a term-time only role, enabling work throughout the academic year.
  • Possess strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Exhibit excellent communication and listening abilities.

In addition to collaborating with the 112 maintained schools in East Riding, we also partner with various other educational institutions, including academy schools and trusts. This collaboration ensures stable contracted hours. To uphold our commitment to quality service, we provide our team with professional development opportunities, including the Clerks Development Programme, Governance in Academies training, and NGA Learning, along with a range of additional benefits.

The standard working hours are 18.5 hours per week, from Tuesday to Thursday, with the possibility of attending governance meetings on Monday evenings based on school allocations. This may involve 1 to 3 evening meetings weekly, scheduled to accommodate your lifestyle. Most meetings take place at schools across the East Riding of Yorkshire in the evenings, with some conducted virtually. Therefore, flexibility is essential, and while the position is primarily based at County Hall, the role requires extensive travel across the East Riding.
