Research Associate in Superconducting Electrical Machines

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Associate to join our team in the Institute for Energy Systems, School of Engineering, College of Science & Engineering at The University of Edinburgh.
The successful candidate will be part of a project funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies program, which aims to develop enabling technologies for high power density and high efficiency electrical machines using high temperature superconductors (HTS) and composite structural materials.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research in applied superconductivity and electrical machines, with a focus on developing novel topologies of superconducting electrical machines for energy and transport applications.
- Collaborate with the team to investigate the feasibility of using HTS materials in electrical machines, and to develop new machine topologies that can fully exploit the characteristics of HTS.
- Design and set up test rigs for experimental work, and conduct experiments to validate the performance of the new machine topologies.
- Develop and implement control systems for the electrical machines, and analyze the results of the experiments.
- Communicate research findings through publications, presentations, and reports.
Requirements:
- PhD in Superconducting Electrical Machines or a related field.
- Experience in electromagnetic structural and thermal modelling of electrical machines and their control.
- Experience in setting up test rigs for experimental work.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with experience of presenting at conferences and writing technical reports.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a creative and flexible approach to problem-solving.
