WAMD Eye Care Technician

Folkestone, Kent, United Kingdom Newton Place Surgery Full time

Position Overview

Newton Place Surgery is a community-focused healthcare provider dedicated to delivering exceptional eye care services to our patients.

We are seeking to expand our team with the addition of six WAMD Eye Care Technicians. This role involves working on a part-time basis, specifically every other Sunday, where three technicians will be required each week. This arrangement allows for a job share, ensuring a balanced work schedule.

As a WAMD Eye Care Technician, you will serve as a key representative of our eye care services, often being the first point of contact for patients during their visits. A warm, friendly, and empathetic demeanor is essential in creating a welcoming environment.

This position is dynamic and fast-paced, requiring you to interact with multiple patients and guide them through various diagnostic assessments. The results of these assessments will be forwarded to a senior clinician to determine if further intervention, such as an intravitreal injection, is necessary. During weekend shifts, you will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, performing tasks such as:

  • Visual Acuity Testing
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Procedures
  • Assisting in the Intravitreal Injection Room

Familiarity with diverse equipment and systems is crucial, as we seek individuals who are comfortable with technology.

Understanding that intravitreal injections can be intimidating for patients, our WAMD Eye Care Technicians must possess the ability to reassure and comfort patients. Strong communication skills are vital for explaining the purpose of various tests, ensuring that patients are well-informed about their treatment options.

About Our Organization

The team at Newton Place Surgery is led by our Service Manager, supported by a group of experienced Consultant Ophthalmologists who rotate through our facility.

We pride ourselves on fostering a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Our modern facility is designed to be clean and comfortable for both staff and patients.

At Newton Place Surgery, we uphold a strong commitment to patient care and professionalism.

We offer a competitive benefits package, including 25 days of annual leave plus 8 bank holidays (pro-rata), the opportunity to join the NHS pension scheme, and access to various NHS discounts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate an understanding of age-related macular degeneration and its patient care pathway.
  • Conduct Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) testing to a high standard, ensuring patient dignity and privacy are maintained.
  • Perform visual acuity assessments using both Snellen and COMPlog methods.
  • Administer eye drops under the guidance of a Consultant Ophthalmologist.
  • Measure intraocular pressure using an iCare tonometer.
  • Assist in the Intravitreal Injection Room, adhering to strict aseptic protocols.
  • Maintain and care for the equipment utilized within the outpatient clinic.
  • Provide clear and concise instructions to patients to ensure their understanding and cooperation, considering various patient needs.
  • Act as a chaperone when necessary.
  • Continuously update knowledge and skills, maintaining a professional portfolio and engaging in further training to enhance patient care quality.
  • Ensure cleanliness and sanitation of work areas between patient visits.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully within the team.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality in all communications.
  • Collaborate as a team player.
  • Participate in bi-annual audits related to age-related macular degeneration.
  • Embrace opportunities for professional development and training to benefit the service and its patients.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE grades A to C in English and Mathematics or equivalent qualifications.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working within an age-related macular degeneration service in the UK.
  • Experience in dealing with vulnerable patient populations.

Desirable

  • Experience working at Newton Place Surgery or similar community ophthalmology services.
