HR Officer

We are seeking an experienced HR Officer to join our team on a 2-3 month contract basis. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing HR casework, providing advisory support to managers, and engaging with employees and trade unions.
Key Responsibilities- Provide professional advice, guidance, and support to managers, headteachers, and governors on a wide range of employment and related issues.
- Deliver options, progress, and solutions on complex casework, including disciplinary, grievance, sickness absence, and capability cases.
- Work closely with managers, headteachers, and governors to resolve key business and people-led problems and issues.
- Support and guide service managers in dealing with investigations and disciplinary and other conduct matters.
- Support Senior HR Advisors and other managers in conducting employee relations, consultations, and collective bargaining with employees and trade union/professional body representatives.
- Challenge existing practices and thinking, and influence local service managers on matters concerning people management.
- Undertake HR and OD policy and project work as required, ensuring that policies are updated in line with legislation changes and best practice.
- Contribute to service-led projects and business initiatives from a people management perspective.
- Proven experience and knowledge in high-level, complex disciplinary, grievance, sickness absence, and capability cases.
- Proven experience in an Employee Relations operational HR role within a large organisation with a diverse workforce.
- Proven experience in managing and advising on complex cases, including sickness, disciplinary, grievance, and equalities.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation and recognised best HR practice.
- Ability to effectively communicate on complex issues at all levels in an appropriate and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
Somerset Council supports hybrid working, with a requirement to work in County Hall, Taunton, minimum 2 days per week, and to travel around Somerset. Access to a personal vehicle is desirable.
