About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join our team at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a high-quality clinical service, as well as contributing to the leadership and strategic development of the service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Triage referrals into the service in a multi-professional setting
  • Provide local area consultation and advice pre-referral where relevant or indicated
  • Conduct joint assessments with senior psychological staff and manage children and young people who are experiencing gender incongruence
  • Undertake detailed and complex assessments aligned to a pre-agreed approach, using a high degree of clinical expertise
  • Support the development of care plans, including using clinical judgement regarding priority of support, expected timelines, etc.
  • Liaise with other health professionals and social care teams as necessary to support appropriate care for patients
  • Provide consultation and support to the multidisciplinary team, including complex case support, risk management, and diagnostic dilemmas
  • Conduct holistic consultations tailored to age and presentation with children and young people with/without parents/carers
  • Be a key member of the multidisciplinary team, planning and guiding individualized care for each child and young person
  • Communicate complex information in a skilled and sensitive manner with a specialist caseload of young people and their parents/carers
About the Team

The Children and Young People's Gender Service is a new service that is part of the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust. The service is designed to provide a high-quality clinical service to children and young people who are experiencing gender diversity. The team is multidisciplinary and includes psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

Requirements
  • MRCPsych qualification
  • CCT in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Full GMC Registration and inclusion on the Specialist GMC Register
  • Section 12 and Approved Clinician status (or undertaking to obtain this on taking up the post)
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • Higher academic qualification, such as an MD or PhD
  • Experience of working with young people in mental health community settings
  • Experience of effective multidisciplinary team working
  • Evidence of leadership experience
  • Therapeutic skills relevant to the management of children and young people with complex presentations
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding procedures
Key Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, clinical colleagues, support staff, and other colleagues
  • Good knowledge of and ability to use spoken and written English
  • Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-professional basis with all levels of staff both within and across divisions
  • Ability to be a flexible team member
Working Arrangements

The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly and be willing to travel to and work in other sites as necessitated by the role.
