About the Role

Cranleigh STEM, Sustainability & SHEQ Recruitment is seeking a highly skilled HSE Advisor to join our team. As an HSE Advisor, you will play a critical role in supporting the Site Manager and ensuring the appropriate HSE support and arrangements are in place.

Main Responsibilities

  • Participate in the definition, communication, and implementation of the HSE objectives, improvement programs, and actions to enhance the Safety Culture, prevent accidents, and cases of occupational ill health, and continually improve the environmental performance of the company.
  • Facilitate, support, or lead the implementation of the agreed HSE objectives and targets.
  • Be an active member of the Management Team and HSE Team; in cooperation with the other HSE Team members, the Senior Management Teams, the Laboratories' Quality Managers, and the Operations, coordinate and maintain the integrated HSE Management System.
  • Lead on the compliance with the HSE legal requirements and industry best practice.
  • Lead on the undertaking of HSE Risk Assessments, ensure that relevant management and/or workers are engaged, and that the identified risks and controls are effectively communicated.
  • Jointly with departmental managers, identify HSE training needs and ensure relevant training is provided to ensure legal and other requirements are met.
  • Support the operational managers and monitor to ensure that all the operational safety and environmental checks are being completed regularly and the identified actions addressed in a timely manner.
  • Act as the company's fire officer and liaise with the Fire Brigade in case of an emergency.
  • Complete HSE compliance assessment of contractors, provide arrangements for inductions, and monitoring of contractors whilst on the company premises. Monitor that where relevant their work is controlled through permit to work.
  • Depending on the incident, either lead or support the investigation of the root cause of HSE incidents reported by staff members, customers, clients, and contractors and report the result to line managers and HSE Leader.
  • Assist with and inspect job activities during particularly difficult or hazardous work situations and deliver HSE training, if required.
  • Provide support and advice to operational teams and to ensure that they are aware of their obligations in complying with environmental standards.
  • Contribute to the monthly report by providing information about the status of HSE performance, including HSE statistics, progress of the agreed HSE objectives, status of compliance and training, findings from audits, and the status of completion of the resulting actions to the respective General Managers and the HSE Leader.
  • There will be a requirement from time to time to support other sites which will draw upon the HSE Advisor's experience and expertise, and this may encompass, for example, Mental and Occupational Health, Emergency Management, Chemical and Biological Safety. The exact nature of this will depend on the HSE Advisor's areas of specialism and expertise and specific business requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent.
  • Lead auditor qualification would be advantageous.
  • Must hold a valid UK driving licence.
  • Previous experience in a Health, Safety, and Environmental role and the familiarity of maintaining the HSE management systems certified to ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 14001:2015.
  • Mental Health training.
  • Manual Handling training.
  • Fire Safety.
  • Level 3 Award in Training and Education.
  • Experience in water hygiene, environmental, or analytical services with robust knowledge of chemical safety.
