About the Role

Cranleigh STEM, Sustainability & SHEQ Recruitment is seeking a highly experienced Health, Safety, and Environmental Specialist to join our client's team in Kent. As a key member of the Management Team and HSE Team, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the company's integrated HSE Management System meets the relevant ISO standard requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the definition, communication, and implementation of HSE objectives, improvement programs, and actions to enhance the Safety Culture, prevent accidents, and cases of occupational ill health, and continually improve the environmental performance of the company.
  • Facilitate, support, or lead the implementation of agreed HSE objectives and targets.
  • Be an active member of the Management Team and HSE Team, coordinating and maintaining the integrated HSE Management System.
  • Lead on compliance with HSE legal requirements and industry best practice.
  • Lead on undertaking HSE Risk Assessments, ensuring relevant management and/or workers are engaged, and that identified risks and controls are effectively communicated.
  • Jointly with departmental managers, identify HSE training needs and ensure relevant training is provided to ensure legal and other requirements are met.
  • Support operational managers and monitor to ensure all operational safety and environmental checks are completed regularly, and identified actions are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of the company's Integrated Management System to ensure it meets the relevant ISO standard requirements.
  • Act as the company's fire officer and liaise with the Fire Brigade in case of an emergency.
  • Ensure regular emergency response exercises and drills are conducted to ensure the highest level of preparedness in any emergency. Maintain records of such drills and provide recommendations for emergency response improvements.
  • Complete HSE compliance assessment of contractors, provide arrangements for inductions, and monitor contractors while on the company premises. Monitor, where relevant, their work is controlled through permit to work.
  • Depending on the incident, either lead or support the investigation of the root cause of HSE incidents reported by staff members, customers, clients, and contractors, and report the result to line managers and HSE Leader; make recommendations for corrective and preventive actions.
  • Follow up to ensure that corrective actions are implemented where necessary in a timely manner and ensure that any certification requirements are complied with.
  • Assist with and inspect job activities during particularly difficult or hazardous work situations and deliver HSE training, if required.
  • Provide support and advice to operational teams and ensure they are aware of their obligations in complying with environmental standards.
  • Contribute to the monthly report by providing information about the status of HSE performance, including HSE statistics, progress of agreed HSE objectives, status of compliance and training, findings from audits, and the status of completion of resulting actions to the respective General Managers and the HSE Leader.
Requirements
  • Minimum NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent.
  • Lead auditor qualification would be advantageous.
  • Must hold a valid UK driving licence.
  • Previous experience in a Health, Safety, and Environmental role and familiarity of maintaining the HSE management systems certified to ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 14001:2015.
  • Expertise or specialism including relevant qualifications would be desirable in some or all of the following:
    • Mental Health training;
    • Manual Handling training;
    • Fire Safety;
    • Level 3 Award in Training and Education;
    • Competency in producing COSHH assessments;
    • Experience in water hygiene, environmental, or analytical services with robust knowledge of chemical safety.
